Freezing Your Credit (Security Freeze)
If you live in the US and you'd like to reduce the chances of identity theft and minimize the amount of credit card offers you receive, then get a "security freeze".

When a security freeze is in place at all three major credit bureaus, an identity thief cannot open a new account because the potential creditor or seller of services will not be able to check the credit file. When the consumer is applying for credit, he or she can lift the freeze temporarily using a PIN so legitimate applications for credit or services can be processed.

I am posting this information because people are getting ripped off by purchasing identity theft protection and other overpriced services directly from the three credit bureaus. In addition, not many people are aware of a security freeze and the credit bureaus don't advertise it since it competes with their services.

Trust me, the security freeze works perfectly. I just tried to refinance an auto loan and test the system. As directed, Equifax would not release my credit history and the loan was put on hold until I temporarily lifted the freeze. Later this year, temporarily unfreezing your credit in my state will only take a few mouse clicks and a $5 fee. Each state has its own laws, so your mileage may vary slightly. Good luck.

You may also request that the credit agencies flag your account. With this, you provide a phone number to the credit agencies that you will use to confirm that you are the one requesting credit. Any time that someone attempts to extend you credit, the agencies tell them they must contact you at that phone number before they can extend credit. Has worked well for my wife after her identity was stolen several years ago.
