Honestly, I think the problem is that we've let the idea of some kind of higher ideals into foreign policy. The purpose of foreign policy ought to be to promote the national interest (selfishly) at the lowest possible cost. Once you start making the purpose "to do good" you open yourself up to all kinds of argument as to what "good" is, and also to the idea that some level of "good" is worth any cost.
Personally, I think that the best balance of cost and benefit in a foreign policy is basically not to have a foreign policy, and let the rest of the world manage it's own affairs.
My major objection to US adventurism in Iraq, Afghanistan, or anywhere else, isn't that it's immoral (which I believe it is)--it's that it's expensive, and our government expects us to pay for it.
