Re: [B.A.S.E] Heliboogie Kjerag 2008
DON'T MISS JUMPING KJERAG!!!! On your deathbed you won't regret the things you did, you'll regret the things you didn't do, and once you've jumped Kjerag you'll realize the trip was worth every penny.
Buy food and beer in Stavanger, cart it over to the ferry, and unload it in your tent or cabin. It will still be costly, but you'll be happier with plenty to eat and drink on hand.
Don't convert currency in your head. Spending NOK is like playing with Monopoly money; it doesn't really mean much unless you're silly enough to work out the conversion and realize you just spent like $30 on a 6-pack of 12 oz. bottles of beer. JUST DON'T DO IT!
I have spent thousands of dollars in order to jump Kjerag, and I even worked there one summer (and spent more than I earned, of course) but the money has NO value to me compared to the joy, the freedom, the exhilaration of jumping that cliff.
Don't whine about the hike (you soft, fat, unfit Americans!!!) and just take it slow. Pace yourself, enjoy the exercise and beautiful environment, and as you're dragging your butt up Hell Hill, just keep in mind "the downhill will be earned" (Lori Barr) and the joy of this "downhill" is in direct proportion to the effort of getting to the top. If you have physical problems the helicopter is a great way to get there, but I've seen 50 year old men with bad backs and hip replacements make the hike in under 2 hours. If you young bucks complain I'll be the first to call you a friggin' sissy.
Basic Research used to offer the Norway Expedition that included all transportation (airline tickets not included), lodging, meals, FJC, SBK membership, gear, jumps, boat rides, goodies, (even beer) and video for one price. It was the best deal going because you could go, get trained, jump, and eat and drink with no hassles, no shelling out cash every 10 minutes. I don't know if Apex BASE is getting it worked out, but with enough demand I'm sure Todd could be encouraged to get the Expedition going again.
Now that I'm in retirement from BASE and skydiving, there is one thing that keeps me from saying I"ll never jump again, and that one thing is...
KJERAG.
Do it before you die, or you'll die wishing you'd done it.
Peace,
Karen
