Re: [panavision] Tokyo
I visited Japan but before I started BASE.
The skydives in Fuji Oka were amazing
cause in freefall you're looking at Mt Fuji.

While there I recommend staying atleast
one night at a Ryokan (traditional inn),
riding on a Shinkansen (super fast train),
and visiting Kyoto.

Re: [panavision] Tokyo
When I flew into Japan I had a 6hr layover, so I headed to Naritisan Temple.

Here is a quote from my journal from that trip:

In reply to:

I had a 6 hour layover in Narita (near Tokyo, Japan), so I decided to get out of the airport and see some of Japan. I choose to go to Naritasan Park and Shinshoji Temple, Narita. I walked all over the park, from the temples, and schools to the ancient graveyard. There are miles of trails and I walked only a few.

There was one strange thing that happened to me while there. I found a temple and walked to the lowest point and saw stair on both sides going up to a point in the middle that lead up to the top. In between was a fountain and higher than that was a spot that had 3 lions; those fountains were not working. There was also a sloping trail for those needing easier access. I choose to walk the many steps up to the top. When I got to the fountain I took a few pictures and then headed up the center stairs. Note that I had about 50 lbs of stuff that I was carrying from the plane as carry-on with me this whole time. When I get to the top of the stairs at the base of the temple I turned around and fountains were now not working on the main fountain at the very bottom. Maybe my journey there was now complete? Note sure, but I felt accomplished and maybe a little enlightened.

Below is a little about the temple:
QUOTE from http://www.naritasan.or.jp/
"Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is the main temple of the Shingon Sect of Chizan-ha Buddhism. Founded by Archbishop Kancho in the third year of Tenkei (940 a.d.), the temple is dedicated to Fudo Myouou, the god of fire; the image of which was carved and consecrated by Saint Kobo Daishi. Since its foundation, Shinshoji has attracted many followers of the Fudo faith, and is visited by about ten million people a year."

Re: [panavision] Tokyo
Lived there for 8 years and had many "spiritual" experiences myself. Know a few skydivers but no one doing BASE. Just a word of warning my friend. In Japan the police 'tolerate' gaijin but will have no problem at all tacking your balls to the wall if they so desire. Friends of mine have spent 2 months inside on 'allegations' of wrong doing and then deported without conviction.
That being said, if you can get away with it, in hindsight there are plenty of things to be conquered.

Yeah, wasn't there a guy talking
about static lining a low-ish bridge
a while back on the old forum?

Could search for the thread but... I'm
lazy, don't care, and too busy grading
piss poor papers.

Yes really. Although I know that BASE has been done in Japan I personally don't know any of the jumpers. Mind you thats not surprising as, if you are not aware, it is a rather large city with a correspondingly large population and I didn't find time to meet everyone.TongueCrazy

When all else fails, maybe head out to a couple of DZs and make a skydive or two and ask around over some beers.

Re: [leroydb] Tokyo
Plenty of jumps have been made. There are some jumpers there - although not very active. One of their more prominent died in a tandem accident a few years ago.

Lots of structures. Lots of security.

Risk v reward. You do the sums.

My cousin is a student in Japan. He lives in Matsumoto where Gaijin are a rare sight. The cops will stop you sooner or later and ask for all your papers. They're absurdly polite, but also very strict. My cousin says most people think gaijin are cool but they're always on their guard. He's 6 foot 4 and he has the "Arian" look so he should know.

My guess is you don't want to get caught as a foreigner who doesn't speak the language.

I spent 6 hours at a local cop shop in Tokyo cause a friend of mine got caught riding an unregistered scooter that I sold him for a $100.

That was probably me & my buddy, R. Neither of us live there anymore.

I never met any active locals. If you are going there for a short time, I'd highly recommend just doing something cultural and enjoying a "normal" trip. If you are going to be in the country for a while, PM me, or see if the gear manufacturers can offer you any leads.
