Bone Stimulators
Has anybody been prescribed a "Bone Stimulator" for non-union fractures?? How were the results??

This gadget is expensive.

Re: [stitch] Bone Stimulators
My girlfriend has one from her compound tib/fib that I've also been using. I think we both had spiral breaks but I'm no ortho. I'm 4 months since my busted fibula and I just made my first BASE jump back last night. I had surgery to get the hardware out on 1/2/08, so I'm guessing I still have screw holes in the bone and the doc "recommends" I take another month or two before I ease into high-impact activities.

The device we have is like an ultrasound or something with a little circular pad you rub goo onto and then strap onto the problem spot. Push the button and wait for the beep 20 minutes later, it tingles a little. I don't know if she had to pay for it or if we're just borrowing it.

to any docs out there:

would this device be usefull to accelerate or possibly even improve bone strength/health?

accelerate normal fracture (non-non union) healing?

just curious?

Im only 1/2 doctor but there are all sorts of studies with varied results. My understanding is that they do not significantly improve healing all the time in normal healing fractures, but if you have fractures that are failing to heal, they can improve recruitment of osteoblasts (bone forming cells) to the area. Kind of one of those things that some docs will give to all patients, some will give to non-healing, and some will not recommend ever. I for one dont see how it would hurt, even if it doesnt help, so go for it.

meh, my bones are good for the moment. But i had a long conversation with my Orthopedic surgeon about stem cells, marrow enhancements, Hormones, etc. he did not tell me about a non-invasive magic bone machine. i guess its because it is not really what i was thinking. thanks!

I've known a couple of people that were haveing trouble healing bad breaks. One thing that did help was a change they made in there diet. Same thing in both cases. They couldn't seem to heal the bone even with the machine. Some one suggested eating chicken bones and egg shells. Aparently calceum comes in diffrent forms and your body can more easily absorb chicken bone. Chew them up when you get your hot wings.

After 2 failed attempts at healing my femur, we decided to try a third rod replacement with bone marrow injections at the non union sight, and the use of a bone stimulator.
Every 3 month check up after my last surgery, Xrays were taken, and you could finally see bone growth. Finally, one year later, my bone was healed!!!Cool

I'm not exactly sure what caused the non union to heal, but if i ever break another bone in my body, I'm definately using that bone stimulator.

Yep...you can eat fish with little soft bones as well to boost calcium intake...

Yeah, I asked her and it was four grand but the insurance covered it after some arguing. They wanted to make sure she was really broken first. She replied, well, I could see the bone sticking out. My break wasn't that bad, but four months later I'm jumping again, and I drank plenty.
