Yeah this is Jeb's attempt last year, watching it it seems as if he could of got away with it if he stood up and launched himself from the top of the railings.

Great shot, not seen that before, also looking at it, i think somebody causing a distraction for a few seconds nearby would of helped as the security were on him in seconds!

Just saw this online yesterday, hoping to hear Jeb's response to suing the owners of the ESB and the security guards for $30 MILLION, for "severe emotional distress"

http://www.nypost.com/...jump_suit_711353.htm

Hope you win, maybe now you can take that BASE trip that you've always wanted. Felix ain't got nothing on you!

Re: [Matt123] Anyone know this dude?Empire State Building Attempt..
I don't understand this either. The security guys are less than a yard away from him.

I think he sounds a bit like Tom Cruise in that interview on psychiatry. Trying to convince security guys who have obviously made up their mind.

In reply to:
He was there to file a $30 million lawsuit against the Empire State Building Company, accusing the building’s agents of defaming his character, unlawfully imprisoning him on the observation deck and causing him emotional distress and lost income.

That's quite ridiculous really.

When the last time you heard of a non ridiculous law suit.....

Was that the exit point he was standing on he should of jumped off backwards and turned around when he was let go for just a second.

here's what my SPECULATION is based on the B :
there's a ledge not too far below the exit point - you need a really good push facing forward and a strong track. a slider up rig will let the user snivel into AT BEST, most likely just kill them if the above is not done right.

Re: [vid666] Anyone know this dude?Empire State Building Attempt..
It depends where he's getting off from, if he's getting off from the narrow sides he's screwed, if he gets off dead centre he should be fine.... hypothesising. Check out this pic:

There's no ledge for many floors below in the middle of the north and south sides of the building - these are the only jumpable sides.

From the sound of his legal reasoning and from his look in the photograph, Mr. Corliss appears to be an idiot.

Just one of the gems in the responses to the article.

This phenomenon is called "thin slicing" and is documented in Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink which in itself is curiously apt.

Why is it that you can tell someone is a dick in 2 seconds just from seeing a photograph? Maybe its the distended cranium and the propensity to say ludicrous shit.

What a twat!

I had a few friends send me the video today.... It got old. Wink I thought... "If Jeb had Pepperspray, he could have gotten the few seconds he needed." And, since he was already using the "you are going to kill me" line, it would have been in "self defense."Tongue

Anywho... I also thought he was not going to sue the city... Couldn't this cause the city to make an anti base jumping law?

This is a possible case of Self verus the better good of BASE...

I don't think he is suing the city. The article says he is suing the Empire State Building Company.

The possibility of an anti base jumping law is certainly a bad thing. It may come to this if enough negative attention is brought to base. But hopefully this will not happen.

I guess this all goes back to the whole ethics of dayblazing issue.

the 'let go or you'll kill me' actually does make sense of course, I wonder who those people were who stopped them. (the initial part, the tourists hanging on to him)

Re: [Calvin19] Anyone know this dude?Empire State Building Attempt..
Good question. Would most people there even know what he was going to do? For all we know, they could have thought he was going to commit suicide. And, Jeb couldn't exactly explain to the crowd that he knew what he was doing.

I know every time I need attention I put on a harness, a helmet, and a big fat camera and climb over the railing of a building and threaten to jump.

They were not tourists. They were building security. And there has been talk of the whole incident happening because someone tipped off building security.

if i didnt base jump and saw some guy in all black climbing over the rail i would think he was a muslim terrorist. he definitly needed some sort of distraction up top maybe a couple of black cats would have directed attention away from him long enough for him to do his thing. but i dont know if jeb would have approved that he loves attention as this lawsuit proves.

JEB ON THE TODAY SHOW
Jeb's interview with Matt Lauer on the Today Show, January 17, 2008:

I'm not sure how this will play out for the sport of BASE jumping, but I do believe Jeb is doing what he thinks is right.

I don't think its stupidity. I think it is bad for a person to talk down on the intelligence of another.

I think the people who voted that he should not have been allowed to jump were the same people who have never lived. they go to work, and come home and watch TV. They take their trailer around the country when they retire and visit places like Yosemite, grand canyon, etc. they have never been really alive a day in their life, just following the rules.(I'm not saying BASE is the only way to live, I'm saying that by calling them stupid for thinking this we are no better than they are for thinking the only way to enjoy life is to look at living from the outside) and thats ok, the more completely worthless, useless people there are in the world, the more special and amazing people like us become.

at the same time, these worthless people vote to make a law against base jumping in every city, and they have the majority.

thats why its hopeless. the worthless people outnumber the ones who are actually alive.

on Kauai, Hawaii, at an orgasmic, incredible lookout view area of the Na Pali shore, a fat old lady asked me, "why do you have to paraglide here? why can't you just enjoy the view like the rest of us"?
-"its the difference between going out to dinner with the hottest girl in the world, and have hot wild jungle sex with her"

I don't think she liked the response.

Let me get this straight: it's bad to speak unkindly about another person's intelligence, but it's okay to call them worthless?

Wow. That's screwed up. The ESB sues a BASE jumper for $12 million just for attempting a jump, and you want to leap in and help them deal with the countersuit. I find it appalling that you'd even suggest such a thing, but if you're serious about it, then you're truly a rat's rat.

Re: [crwper] JEB ON THE TODAY SHOW
hahaha... at least someone caught that.

Basically what I was saying, is by telling them they are stupid, we are no better than they are for calling us stupid for wanting to do this stuff.

IMHO, it should be illegal for overly fat people to appear in public. but you don't see me making a poll about that.

Tolerance. these people are not really worthless, just, well, biased in a way that makes them ignorant.

A quote from somewhere on dz or BJ.com:
In reply to:
if you don’t understand something because it is different then what you are used to that does not make it stupid, it might mean you are ignorant.

Then again there is also this quote:
In reply to:
"Do they shut down the Dunkin Donuts every time someone dies of a heart attack you fat cow?"

If you really think that this won't make it harder for others in the future then you either don't care about people being able to jump in the future or you are just ablivious to the ramifications of Jeb's actions.

Oh, I have little doubt that it will. But Jeb's not offering to testify against other jumpers. He's not even offering to show how he bypassed a series of locked doors. Near as I can tell, he's offering to give security tips on building areas that are already open to the public.

I said it above, and I'll say it again. If faced with the scenario I see here -- a 12 million dollar lawsuit -- I'd do the same. And I think most jumpers would. If your choice would be to bend over in the name of some abstract principle, then I suppose that choice is yours to make.

Look, maybe he was sloppy, and his arrest will probably heat things up for a while. That sucks. The fact remains that $12 million is grossly out of proportion with what he did, and I think that makes self-defense a reasonable tactic. If the same had happened to Joe Average jumping in the Valley, you know people around here would be calling for protests and legal action in support of the jumper.

It's certainly possible that Jeb could have managed this better from the get-go. Building owners often talk about making an example of someone, but it seems like cooler heads usually prevail.
