I'd heard that a minor offense (like trespassing) plus use of a police scanner equals a major offense. You might want to look into that before bringing one along.

Don't waste your money, they are useless...use the money to buy a new pilot chute or a range finder, or 100 hamburgers from the value menu at Wendy's instead.

i'm in florida where trespassing is a major offense."felony" i was thinking it would be nice to get notice if the police were dispatched during one of my hour and a half climbs. gives me the chance to get off a little early or climb down. thanx for the heads up. maybe ground crew could monitor the scanner?

ground crew monitor.. good idea.. but then the scanner is still present.... have a seperate 3rd party monitor from a different local.

You should look into digital trunking systems... (Basically, large municipalities use a radio system where limited frequencies serve multiple channels - every time the radio needs to transmit - the radio finds one of the frequencies in the available pool that is not used at that specific moment - with the theory that many, many channels can be broadcast on limited frequencies because not every channel is being used simultaneously.)

This means, scanners are difficult at best - because every transmission could be on a different frequency.

Also - with the modern age of computers, a lot of dispatching occurs on laptop screens and GPS systems where the dispatcher can send info to the nearest cop.

Simple solution.... Date a 911 dispatcher who can send you a text message with a code word... I hear some of them are cute.Tongue

Re: [tdog] police scanners???
I dated a 911 dispatcher for a while. I was always trying to figure out how I could get her to move police away from my location during the climb and jump without getting her into too much trouble. I figured I could at least use her to monitor the location of the police.

Of course, the time I got arrested she was ground crew, so it didn't do me much good other than the fact that she knew exaclty which station I would be taken to and had their phone number memorized.

The problem is that 911 dispatchers turn into bitches real fast. Has something to do with talking to stupid people all the time. They get really calloused and short fused.

Re: [leroydb] police scanners???
Scanners would be a good and useful tool for ground crew. Then GC just relay info by normal radio or cell phone to the jumpers if need be. But finding such a fuckingtard Scanner 'Nerd' that stays-up late at night for covert and BASE friendly, and that works for Beer and petrol money. Would be a rare and valuable find indeed.
I would 'Not' concentrate my effort with use of a dual-trunking, hand held scanner on monitoring LE transmisions for a BASE tool. But monitor 'who' is calling the Cops on you. Like the RentaCops that are most hired for policing object. Scanners can be used to monitor the public frequency of private grounds security for better results. I have seen there frequency Codes posted on the internet as it is public knowledge free for the looking. Because they must buy permits and (be on file) as a registered owner/user to use these public transmission frequency codes . Therefore You 'Will' stand a better chance mentoring them. Then picking-up the transmissions/calls from the Security 'RentaCops' as they talk to there company dispatch when the actual LE is being called to investigate your possible trespassing infraction. I do believe you can use them to also monitor Fed. and State parks too. All frequencies used are public free knowledge. I have seen there frequencies posted as well.
There is a lot of time and hard work involved for scanner ownership and learning the Scanner-Game. The scanners used can easily listen-in on most of the Routine Traffic, Fire and emergency/ambulance response but there are encrypted frequencies that can not be monitored on the local LE. They are getting pretty complex and ever-changing as local LE county and state grow. Probably and likely LE will be encrypted and out of touch in time just like Military that encrypts /scrambles Freq. transmitted something like a million times a second.
