you know, i've just tried to sit on the sidelines about all this BASEr stuff... but after actually looking at their webpage... WTF?!

first off, proof reading will help out a ton. furthermore, the explanation and description of the "mesh vents" has got to be the most "wack" thing i've read in a while.

I agree. I don't really get it either. I admire Sonic's enthusiasm, but it seems like he is trying to reinvent Base gear.

From what I've always understood, the 3 major Base canopy manufacturers spent many years developing and testing vented, then vented and valved canopies. To me, it seems like if they could have found a way to eliminate the extra costs of installing valves, they would have found it.

at least he's trying... props for that...

I went back and read the BaseX canopy info, plus the info concerning vented canopies on this site and others.

I'm sorry but I still don't see how the BaseX concept is anything but a backwards step in technology.

Unless, they have came up with an innovative valving system for the crossports, what is there to stop air from escaping back through the vents??

The way that I understand what they are saying is that by having less vented cells, less air will escape overall. those large mesh vents let more air in faster, pressurizing outwards through the crossports at quicker pace. by just having cells 3 and 5 lose a little pressurization in deep brakes, you still have some flare in the remainder of the canopy.

From what Ive seen on here I like the looks of the container and the abillity to skydive with it. HOWEVER I am very unconvinced that BaseX could match the performance on all aspects as well as my blackjack zp comp. but maybe I'll rent/demo one for a trip to TF in the spring. if they have that page available on their website then.

I guess it's going to be a "We will have to wait and see" scenario. From the rumors circulating, the canopy needs some more R&D before being put into production.

The container, however, seems fine with some innovative features. I do wonder about the magnetic riser covers. Do they have any shielding to protect the polarity. I'm wondering if voltage/radiation from power towers or antennas could have any affect on these.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Nothing wrong with using 'rap' music in jump flicks.
Blincoe, me, and many others have done this before.
Plus it was their own damn song --- Thumbs Up

2. Regarding the lines --- dacron is thicker and stronger
hence it is used to absorb opening shock, same reason
it is used on tandem and very large student gear. I was
told 'Black' lines were for stealth. Thumbs Down

3. Bad writing really fucking annoys me!!! When I read
blatant errors in ads, emails, posts, & student papers I
know the author is ignorant or lazy. Thumbs Down

4. Regarding vents, magnets, etc --- I do not have enough
technical knowledge to make a judgment, however I applaud
their creative spirit to try new things. Thumbs Up

5. Last and least, I have seen newbies with just a few BASE
jumps execute Flippy-Do's, some even on purpose. I am not
ready to try one and if in 10 years I learn enough to have my
own student, he or she won't do one early on either...BUT for
many, BASE is about the freedom to do things that really are
not smart

They are not only for stealth, also for noticing wear and tear easier.

Check out the most expensive, least tested BASE rig and canopies to date!

$1100 for the rig, $1625 for front mount and reserve canopy, and then $1600 if I want a vented 265 that has how many test jumps on it? End cell closures on slider off jumps, that's performance! What happend with the lines again on those test jumps?

Those smaller cheaper vents really knock the price down.... considering you can get a vented valved 266 from a real BASE manufacturer that people are jumping and trusting their lives to regularly for $1675.... Something you'd trust freefalling low....

I think the black lines are supposed to be stronger. But they do look cooler, are more stealthy, and hide the dirt better. The red tailgate lines or at least brake lines are nice to have for packing. I suppose they could have an advantage if you want to pull on a line in line twists or see which line is over the top of the canopy.

I have a spool each of black, red and white. They are all rated to exactly the same strength by the manufacturer of the line.

IIRC the ID DOT (department of transportation), and local law enforcement has asked that people do not launch from the top of the rail.

I was watching when it happened. He was very cold (see the snow on the ground? The water was probably about 35 degrees) and ran all the way out to try to get warm. Aside from the cold, he was unharmed.

The Highway Board (now called the Transportation Board) requested that jumpers not stand atop the handrail in 2000. Earlier this year, some jumpers claimed that the Transportation Department had changed this position. A phone call to the District IV Transportation Department office in Shoshone revealed that (a) there has been no change in position, (b) the Transportation Department cannot legally overrule the Transportation Board (the Board is the governor-appointed public body which supervises the Department, which maintains the state's transport infrastructure), and (c) the Department has made no official statements and holds no official positions on any BASE related issues (probably for liability reasons). In the same call, Bruce Christianson, the District IV traffic engineer, stated that he personally "wish[ed] [he] could find a way to stop you guys from jumping" and that "jumpers will be held responsible for the consequences of their actions." He refused to elaborate on whether that meant that individual jumpers would be held responsible for problems, or whether jumpers collectively would be held responsible for problems caused by some individuals.

We're all adults, and we'll all make our own decisions. Hopefully no one will make decisions that end up hurting others.
