Your first jump.
Hi everyone, I would like to know what your first jump was like? And how it felt once you did it?

It was really really cold (-5' C) outside, so the jump felt rushed, initially.

after the jump, relief. Not from being OK, but the whole experience being over. Then a kind of dissatisfaction, as in, "thats it? thats all it is?" Not that i did not love it, but just that I was expecting a more orgasmic kind of happiness. but, that came later on when I got comfortable.

Was that your first jump, or your first sexual experience from HER point of view? Just fun'n Calvin...chuckle-chuckle Tongue

I made my first jump at BD '02 or '03, can't remember, but I don't really count that experience as my first BASE jump. My first real experience came from my first bandit solo jump from an object I found and opened myself. Not saying it is the right thing to do, or that BD isn't a real BASE jump, but for me it was the most gratifying, and at the same time, the scarriest thing I've ever done.

Really really windy. Scary, awesome, handheld, stable, on heading, stand up, and 360 feet. Thats about how I would describe mine.

I had 24 skydives
Jumped my Skydiving gear
Stowed with a Pud Straight Pin system
36" PC- Collapsable
400" Tower

Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever done.....and I've done some pretty dumb shit. But I was thrilled nonetheless.

was my 1000th freefall and a better rush than the previous 999. Afterward I applied to USPA for my Gold Wings and they balked because one was a BASE jump, but by then I had several more skydives so they gave me my wings anyway...

Re: [fastphil] Your first jump.
My first jump was amazing. Went hand held off an antenna from 600 ft. My biggest fear in the days preceding was that Fear would take over, and I would freeze up.
It wasn't that bad. With a rig on, you are equipped for the environment.

Afterwards, I couldn't have been more stoked.

Bridge Day 2005. I was thinking about BASE since before I finished AFF. I bought new BASE gear that arrived a few months before I left for West Virginia. Three second delay handheld with a 42" PC. I went a tiny bit head low but I was flat and stable when I pitched. It was lots of fun. I packed up got in line and did it again.

1988, a certain 260ft bridge north of Sydney using skydiving gear. I can't remember if it was 4 or 6 lanes but it was daylight with traffic going past. Had to run and then hide 20 minutes before we were picked up. The beer tasted superb that day!!

Thanks Pete and Shane.

Re: [gauleyguide] Your first jump.
Even though Texans invented the term BASE. Austin had had no mentors and we just wanted it sooooooo bad! Texas is a big State and Houston is just 4 hours away(a shitty 4 hours). So we just went for it, came into the saddle at about 40'........I know, really bad idea. I bought a Wonderhog with a Pursuit 215 and a 42" PC for for my second jump and shattered my left ankle. Then I bought BASE gear(thank you Adam P) and have had a great time (mostly) ever since. When I was in the 82nd Airborne, nobody was scared of the 1st jump (cuz' you didn't know what was happening), it was the 2nd that freaked EVERYBODY out, cuz' that's when you did.......fun topic!

~5:30 AM on a windy day
@ The Perrine in Twin Falls

Gear: Perigee Pro/Mojo 280
PCA'd by fellow student in FJC class.

How It Felt

There were 3 of us in the class, I was the oldest
and definitely the most scared. The youngest was
raised on raw meat and ready to go, the second
youngest had already been to Bridge Day twice.

Hence I was able to jump second, which was the slot
I really wanted. I climb over the rail, get in position,
and I am just about to go when Tom A. peers over
his video camera and says:

"Tom, this is your 1st BASE jump, you only
get to do it once, take a moment to enjoy it."

Up until this moment I was so focused on NOT
falling off this bridge while getting in position
that I wasn't really thinking, then his words
lead to roughly the following internal dialogue:

What in the fuck are you doing? You are on a
bridge in a new state with 3 guys you barely
know. Why are you up here? What has led
you to this point? There is definitely something
seriously wrong with you. Fuck all that - FOCUS!

I starred out at the horizon, took several big
deep breaths, double checked the student
holding my PC was ready, and then I gave
my count and stepped off.

The canopy ride down was real cool since
we landed right underneath the bridge. I
stood it up next to the other student and
we both smiled like idiots. It was good.

Perrine, PCA, my 3yr old son standing behind me on the bridge, the minute my feet left the bridge my son started yelling "Good One Daddy! Good One Daddy!,..." until my feet touched the ground.

Hey Hank, all we had was skydiving gear and it "usually" worked fine, but a scary thought now. My twin brother Randy and I, both with old skydiving rigs, 5 cell stratostars with over 2000 jumps on each of them. Did a 1000 foot B in Houston New Years night 82. We'd been skydiving for 10 years, but standing on top of that skyscraper that night for my first BASE jump was the scariest jump I ever made. We did solid fours, head high and had great openings, landed by our car, opened the wine. I was hooked. Before we climbed the stairs, we talked to a jump friend for advice on the B. It was Phil Smith, BASE 1 and he got his B on that same one. What a sport.
