PC 46-48 vs STD vs AV
Hello!

I try to find some information but I guess I need your help! I will order my rig next week (black jack with perigee pro) and I want to order some PC in the same time...

I can see that Apex made 48" PC vs asylum only produce the 46"... can someone have a good explication? one of my friend swear by the 48", my other friend prefer the 46"... jump at the same place... does it really make a big difference?

Asylum produce the 46" but can build the 48" if you pay the price I guess... so do you suggest to go bigger?

Also, i think I will order a 46 STD, 42AV and a 38AV... I'm not sure I want the 46 AV (people say that it inflate with less oscillation but a bit slower).... what do you suggest???

thank's for the info

(I only made 21 jump yet so I need your experience!)

The simplest answer to your question is to go by the recommendations of your gear manufacturer.

Different manufacturers measure their PC's differently, so that one manufacturer might measure pre-sewn size as 48, where another might measure finished size as 46, and the PC's could actually be exactly the same size. I tend to view the size "measurements" of both PC's and canopies as rough approximations when trying to convert between manufacturers.

A 46 or 48 inch PC should be used almost exclusively hand held, for short delays. At those delays, you have the opportunity to pitch upward (toward the sky) rather than outward (in the plane of the earth). This pitch direction, when done well, eliminates the vast majority of oscillations (definitely more than the topskin venting eliminates). I'd buy the top size PC without the vents (and without the handle, without the cap, etc) and then learn to throw it straight up to eliminate the oscillation through technique.

I own Apex 48's, Asylum 46's and Asylum 48's. I can't tell an appreciable difference between the manufacturers and sizes, but I can tell a difference in opening consistency (hesitation rate) between the vented and unvented versions.

Used an Asylum 46" vented as low as 220.
The configuration being AV 46", Gargoyle with pins primed like hell and Mojo 260 full zp top
I had more time under canopy than
48" pc, gargoyle and Fox 260.
My buddy and I being pretty much the same weight.
Both of us go and throw but of course this was only one jump.

Ask the manufacturer, they are very approachable... Marty is cool so I'll push his stuff Smile

I talk to a manufacture that did lot's test on vent and non vent on all size of PC most difference it made was 42" PC the other was not significant enough to make a difference
specially 46 and 48. I sure did notice the difference on 42 PC just like he said,
I buy a 32 vent to take to norway because lot's people on the forum was talking about it and I thought might help make my opening little bit more soft but when I got there E the instructor there tell me the she see more oscillations with the vent than non vent so I never used it just use my trusty 36 non vent PC for all the jump from 4sec to 15sec jumps. my thought is not vent or non vent but more like ZP or F111 for 46 and 48 for low object I have ZP 45 and F111 46 It seem to me the PC 45 ZP open little bit more faster but some thinks it oscillations lot more than F111 but not enough to notice that much difference, one thing for sure I sure well not pay $175 for 48 PC

Ye, I should have avoided replying there; there are so many variables; what I ended up writing is just a crop of shit that is totally misleading to noobes.Unsure

In my opinion, vents (or not) is not first (or even second) on the list of things that make a PC oscillate.

I think the most important thing is pitch technique (but that's only really fixable on hand held, for most jumps and jumpers), followed by symmetry of attachment, followed by material (ZP or F-111), and only then followed by venting and construction method (in which order I don't know).

Saying "I saw more vented PC's oscillate" is a bit like saying "I see more cars with Chevron gasoline get in accidents." The factor you are observing is so far down the list of possible causes that it's hardly worth investigating. And it's not even worth considering until you've eliminated everything above it on the list.

PC vents aren't a magic bullet. They're more like a bandaid. If you do everything else right, they can make some difference on the margin, but if you aren't getting the fundamentals (like symmetric attachment) no amount of venting is going to help you.

Re: [TomAiello] PC 46-48 vs STD vs AV
yea tom the symmetry of attachment is most important
"I saw more vented PC's oscillate"
that was her observation of hundred's the jumper with vent and non vent in from 300ft cliff's in norway not me,

PC vents aren't a magic bullet,
for sure technique is most important but I did notice slightly difference on heading with vent, 8 of 10 I was getting left 10 to 45dg opening than use vent 8 of 10 was getting on heading opening, It might be fluke who knows but I well stick with 42 vent, not the I don't use 42 non vent when I do back to back jump with 42 PC I use both because I only have One 42 vented PC
I do not depend on vented PC for sure

What size Blackjack will you be getting?
(bigger canopies benefit more from bigger PCs on short delays)

What kind of objects do you jumps?
The kind of jumps you do will affect the decision also.

What do your mentor/s say?
This is quite important as presumably they have detailed knowledge of the things you will be jumping and will be jumping with you.

The bottom line is go with what your mentor/s say assuming you have good mentor/s.

Then when you have a few hundred jumps you can better evaluate the options and decide for yourself if you think something else is better.

I've only had PCs from 2 manufacturers and I have never had anything bigger than a 46.

I jump a 260 Blackjack and after much trying out of different PCs, I have settled on a really simple approach:

Slider-off = 46" AV

Slider-up = appropriate PC for delay/type of jump

But then, I don't regularly freefall low stuff (sub 250ft) and therefore almost never go handheld.

I like the 46 AV because of how it packs into a big handle and since I will use it all the way to 3 seconds I might actually have a use for the vent at that point.

I also do a fair amount of slider-off aerials and having seen PC/bridle entanglements, I would rather have a PC that's too big than too small.

thank's for the info!

I will buy a Black Jack 240. Jump mostly bridge, anthenna and building (anyway, this is what people jump in my area)

I will follow my mentor! and buy 3 differents PC... 2 vented and the bigger one not...

thank'S again!
