SOME call it a sport for madmen and it's a sad fact that many of the greats are dead.
But for Felix Baumgartner, BASE jumping is the ultimate in extreme sports, providing an adrenaline hit like no other athletic pursuit.
The man known as "Fearless Felix" and "God of the Skies" yesterday conquered the Big Kahuna of the sport - the world's tallest building, the 509m Taipei 101 Tower.
"That was the ultimate extreme dream," the Austriansaid after free-falling most of the way before opening his parachute, landing safely in a busy city street and jumping into a cab to make his getaway.
Baumgartner's astonishing leap was immediately hailed by extreme sports nuts as a new world record for the highest ever building BASE jump - beating his previous leap from the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (451m).
The word BASE is an acronym derived from B (building), A (antenna), S (span or bridge), and E (earth - cliff or mountain).
Baumgartner is known in extreme sports by his BASE jumping number 502, which is tatooed on his back.
His motto is: "Everyone has limits - not everyone accepts them."
