ever tried green card lottery?
I tried it yesterday, for fun. Filled in all the details and got as far as where you have to pay.

If Zuma becomes president I will have to find a new place to stay. UK has shitty weather, Norway and Switzerland seem cool but too expensive and would probably be more summer holiday spots, I can't speak Italian and I couldn't take the family to France since none of the girls speak french yet and knowing from when I was a kid it's quite a thing having to adapt to a new environment and learn a language at the same time. My bro and I were rough little bare foot South Africans arriving in this dark corner of France. Our Dad was earning $ 4000.00 a month but one of our teachers gave us her son's old shoes because she thought we were so poor... Laugh

Anyways, within 20 minutes I had this dude with a heavy ukrenian accent phoning my house and trying to sell me a 4 year entry into this said lottery. It was quite funny actually.

Anybody have experience with this? Is it a rip off?
I could always apply for political asylum I suppose...Unimpressed

I know a few people who have won the lottery. And as far as political asylum - it would probably be easier for find a job sponsor, and once you have been in the country for awhile to seek asylum and/or permanent residency. I got my refugee status in 1990 (white card) moved in 1992, citizen in 2004 but it's not as lenient now.

Thanks for the serious reply.

Look it's just a thought at the moment. The industry I work in relies heavily on foreign investment. Having Zuma as president is sure to scare off investors. There was a scare before Mandela became president and he turned out to be Mr living legend proving all the brainwashed white population wrong. There was a scare before Mbeki became president but there again the sceptics were until now proven wrong (to a certain extent). I am pretty much a liberal; more left wing than right in the greater scheme of things, but the Zuma dude, I don't dig him one bit.

Also, the core BASErs may frown on this but I still love skydiving and I miss it. In the States, although still expensive, the sport is more accessible to your average bloke like me; you don't have to have a very high paying job or pack a million rigs before being able to do 2 jumps...

Ye, in short that's it. Slowly but surely I am convincing myself it's the way to go.

DV lottery is free. if you reached the lottery through a site that is asking money for it - you went through a Broker site.
The 2008 lottery jsut closed a week ago, so now - if you want to perticipcate in next year's lottery - it will open around October 2008 (for 2009 lottery).

I did try it in the past, and did not win, until finally i moved the US under a working Visa, and found my path to the Green Card on employment base.

bottom line - you missed the train for this year - next year you can register with no problem, and it cost nothing.

Good luck.

Re: [noamk] ever tried green card lottery?
haha, thanks

I would still need some time to sort my stuff out on this side anyway. There was a time when I could just pack one bag and go, and that is what I did, but now, family, house and such responsabilities mean that a move like that would impliy a lot of planning and work. It also means that I can't just go there and be a packer for a time while getting ratings, etc... I would have to get a real job Unimpressed
