How about adding a NEW icon once you have navigated not only in the Forum homepage,like you currently have, but also in the forum name such as "The Hangout".

For example:
New Post Picture<-----Clicky

Maybe it would be good to make the 'New Reply' icon more distinctive from the generic thread icon. They are very similar and having two significantly different icons would help a lot.
