Re: [base283] Evel Knievel. A Doyen of Stuntmen has died
He was my hero as well. I've owned more than one Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle and sure wish I kept one. I met him at at a motor cycle shop in Great Falls Montana when I was about 14.

He was a true daredevil. Jumping a Harley with crummy suspension and the whole Snake River gig Laugh.

Yeah, I remember having one of his red,
white and blue motorcycles you stuck in
a plastic stand and revved it up by turning
a crank till it took off.

Re: [hookitt] Evel Knievel. A Doyen of Stuntmen has died
ALL motorcycles had crummy suspension in the 70's.

Compared to the many, many inches of travel
bikes have today - yeah sure, but still, back
then some bikes were better than others.

Just curious...you started riding young?

Re: [GreenMachine] Vintage Cycles
I originally started riding when I was about 8 or 9, but during that period my older step-brother got hit by a car. So, my mother put a stop to me riding till I was an adult.

I had a few late 70's Suzuki dirt bikes in the 80's, with twin shocks and steel fenders and gas tanks. Ya know, a "Real Man's" motorcycle. Crazy

I can relate, my first bike was a Yamaha
dirt bike from the early 70's which had a
purple, metal gas tank and many, many
other bikes till 2003.

In the attached photo is a 1980 Suzuki GS650
that drove during graduate school and the nice
new bike I bought after getting my 1st jobby
job, a 2001 Suzuki DRZ400, which got totalled
when a kid hit me on it a couple months later.

Um, well I can't upload the photo...

What's really funny is Evel much like yourself never had to take hisself to the bank, store, etc. all on his own, he more than likely had somebody do it for him. I'm STILL waitng on a demonstration from one of the local experts on how to push a shopping cart or carry 4-5 bags of groceries 3 blocks while on crutches and in a full cast. So far, all I've heard is alot of talk.

To ForestJump; If you're such an expert canopy pilot, maybe you should go on the sister site, "dropzone.com", and write an article debunking Scott Miller and Brian Germain. Since NO WIND landings are SO easy. Smile

You have obveously never seen one of Stanfords Crutchclutches. Unfortionently I don't think they are still in production. Room to cary every thing you could desire and a couple of cold beer as well.

Just saying compared to Evel K. YOU are GAY. like the picture said. and WE ALL ARe as well.Blush at least compared to Evel.

But seriously. and I DO mean seriously. WE SHOULD all know how to land OUR Canopies downwind and no wind. Really WE should.

And again sorry about your accident. But your gay, at least compared to Evel K. because of it.Wink
and NO im no canopy expert but im OK with my canopies.

Sorry, but I've never understood people's difficulty with no -wind landings. I'm not saying I'm an expert - but they're seriously frikkin' easy. I just don't understand why I see so many people borking them.

Re: [Tyrion] Evel Knievel. A Doyen of Stuntmen has died
me either. I actually almost favor them. i can and have landed in 0 - 20kt winds. (backwards!) more than handfull of times. ive landed with a 5 tail wind once. you sould be able to land in any condition you jump in, if you cant you shouldnt be jumping.

Re: [nicrussell] Evel Knievel. A Doyen of Stuntmen has died
In a perfect world, no one would ever get hurt or die, Base jumping or Skydiving. Unfortunately, we don't live in that world.

I got complacent after making 65 jumps from the same object in 3 months and was goofing off and not paying attention to what I was doing when landing when I was injured. And yes no wind conditions amplifed the injury. Had I been landing into a 5-10 MPH wind, I would have probably gotten away with it.

RE: No Wind Landings
I personally find landing without any wind
to be a lot easier than landing downwind.
Shortcut
Re: [GreenMachine] RE: No Wind Landings
I bet evel liked down wind landings...

Remind me to not just reply to the last post of the thread next time Laugh

Nevermind, this turned out better.

Edit... and no wind landings are easy on a big gay seven cell.

I hate you all.

Re: [nicrussell] Evel Knievel. A Doyen of Stuntmen has died
I have always prefered no wind landings on any canopy i have ever jumped so much more smooth and pure no turbulence, no gusts changing your ground speed etc.

For shopping, just go to one of the big grocery stores that has one of those electric carts you can sit in. If you have to use a regular shopping cart, ditch one crutch and use the cart to hold up your bad leg. This works to take out the trash bin too. Backpacks are also helpful for carrying stuff. Make sure you get a temporary handicap permit from the DMV, so you can park right next to the store and load your shit directly into your car. As far as carrying stuff three blocks, I don't recommend it. Try to minimize the distance you have to crutch.

As far as landing downwind, if anyone else wants to attempt a 15 mph direct downwind into a five foot deep ditch running perpendicular to you with around five seconds of canopy time on a well used BASE canopy loaded around 1.0 I'll bring the beer.

Oh yeah, Evel was cool.
