Ask 808 and Karnowski about the one we tried.

I call it "Slim Fast"

For climbing down...it's one of the funniest stories you'll hear.

Good Morning Gang,

Well I almost opened my 1st object last night...

This was my first solo attempt and the object type is
new to me so getting to the exit point alone was a
rush and felt like an accomplishment.

Once there I found that it was just touch taller than
I thought but the winds did not feel right so I climbed
down. Probably would have been fine but there is
always another day.

Dude, it was the roof of your house and the pool was 8 foot deep...I don't know why you didn't jump.

You're hooked...now, go get your skydiving shit out of the closet and sell it. You're gonna need a second rig and some more PC's. Tongue

I always felt the beauty of doing solos, especially when I first started, was that it gives you the chance to figure things out for yourself, and to set your own standards. Where as, if you were with another possibly more experienced jumper, that person may persuade you to do something that your gut feeling told you wasn't right. Once you get that feeling for what feels right and what doesn't, never deviate from that, no matter what.

Awesome job on getting on the object and making the decision to back off!!

Solos are fine, but telling someone that is the best way to learn, to "figure things out yourself" isn't the soundest of advice.

You are right.. I wasn't saying, or didn't mean it's the best way to learn, just a good way to find your comfort zone without peer pressure.?

Well done Tom.
Even if you had someone with you telling you everything was fine...its your decision to call it on the feeling you have about the jump.

Regarding Solo's ....I do alot
Provided you have a sensible grounding in site/conditions evaluation I think they are very valuable, especially for your confidence.
Ive walked down from a few of jumps ....because I just didnt feel like it, something was not right.......for me that mentality has developed alot through the solos where the only person I had to justify a no jump decision to...was myself.
Justifying it to myself is much harder than having to justify that decision with anyone I jump with...hence ..after some solos's (and walkdowns from them)...I really dont feel that 'pressure' to jump when in a group, and I'm happy about that.

A few around my neck of the woods are a bit hung up on numbers and opening this or that.
If I go to an object for the first time and figure it out myself... its a very valuable experience...and to me , as good as opening it myself....even if its been jumped umpteen times already by someone else.

There are of course inherent extra risks with solo's which cannot be ignored and will often dictate whether a jump can be made 'safely'

But in balance....I think they are useful and incredibly rewarding.

Re: [GreenMachine] 2nd Attempt -- Still Climbed Down
Always carry a prepaid cell phone with you.

When the cops are around, you can always phone dispatch with an officer down call on the other side of town.

There will be no police around you for 20 minutes.

You get to jump, land safely and you are happy.

The cops find out that one of their buddies isn't dead, and they are happy.

In the end, everyone is happy. And who doesn't love a happy ending?

Re: [GreenMachine] Clever Tactic
Dejavu....your story sounds sooo much like what happened to me once. Except, I was at 1700', the popo was in the parking lot sure nuff down below, two cars, b.s.'n and exchanging dohnut stories, they just ran off some kids lingering in the parking lot, but it was like 35 degrees and I was freezing my ass off for one hour waiting for them to leave. Not kidding. The vator was already down, so I was jumping for sure. It was to the point where I was contemplating going ahead and jumping and facing the outcome, as opposed to staying up there any longer. But just as soon as they started pulling out of the parking lot, I jumped.
After this incident, I took time to completely drive around the object, and park in all the surrounding areas that were below, and looked back towards the tower. What I saw was, that no matter where I parked below, there was no way in hell that anyone could ever possibly see a parachute in the air from all the glare from the street lights, and parking lot lights at night. I could barely make out that there were red flashing lights on the tower. Thats just something to think about when doing site observations. Put yourself in the view from potential witnesses point of view. But you do have to be wary of that occasional loner out walking their dog.
On a side note, I climbed a 600' tower and climbed down, twice in one night because I chickened out, both times.
I thought about the fake 911 calls reporting the officer down thing, but thats just not morally right. Ironic, huh?

are you shitting me? we are giving up too many freedoms... we are destined to go back to a monarchy ...

Re: [leroydb] Clever Tactic
Your freedoms only extend as far as until they begin to encroach/impede upon others freedoms.

A bomb threat, and the ensuing chaos it encompasses would not be protected by any "freedoms". Similiar to yelling "fire" in a crowded place and causing a stampede,

Hey Nick, that has ALWAYS been a nugget so long as the jumper had the guts to admit it and climb down. If it don't feel right, it may not be right.
