digital camera or videocamera?
Hi all, back with me

Now a totally new question...

Soon it will be x-mas etc...and normally my gf would by me a digital camera..but is it maybe more interesting to let her buy a digital videocamera?

If yes... Which type...? maybe one that I can use in the future for skydiving and filming basejumps(from other people).

Re: [santamaria] digital camera or videocamera?
The most common camera I see being
used for jumping are the series of PC
models by Sony.

However, I think I remember you have
something like 90 skydives, most DZOs
want you to have a little more experience
before you start complicating things.

It is very easy for new camera flyers to get
target fixation and lose altitude awareness.
There have even been a few BASE fatalities
due to this complication.

Hi Greenmachine, needed jumps are 200, but as you(or other basejumpers) said, cameraworks starts on the ground?

Although video is extra cool... If you are doing Vid from the ground or have someone doing video of you from the ground i would suggest a Digital Still Camera like a Cannon Rebel XT or XTi... Pictures are worth 1000 words, and also they make you look twice as cool as video Wink

Camera Complications
Good Morning Norbase,

I do not have their names memorized, nor
do I have the time or desire to research
that data for you at the moment.

However, I have read the BASE Fatality list
from beginning to end at least twice before
I ever BASE jumped --- one pass was while
flying from FL to my FJC in Twin Falls.

During that read I actually tallied up the causes
of death under categories and remember having,
I believe, 3 under 'Over Delay due to Camera'.

Re: [GreenMachine] Camera Complications
I do: there have been 5 fatalities resulting from camera flying that are documented on the BASE fatality list (how many more are not on that list? )

See these for descriptions:
#35, #49, #62, #105, #106.

All involving back to earth flying a camera.

I personally wouldn't start Skydiving with a camera until I had all of my other freefall skills down, really well.

An experienced skydiver I know made a good analogy for this: it's like messing with the radio while driving your car.

When you are first learning to drive, and have to remember to shift, or use turn signals, or whatever, adding the radio in the mix could cause an accident - though by itself it's not a dangerous thing, it's all about how accustomed you are to the entire process as a whole.

Re: [ddk632] Camera Complications
Well to actually answer the original question, go with a sony camcorder. I had mine for about a year and a half before I ever jumped it. Mini DV is what I have and I like it a lot. It does take a lot more than a helmet to be able to fly decent video. On the other hand, while you are waiting to jump it, your camera can be used for a lot of other awesome things....especially if it was a present from your gf. I also have a canon rebel xti which is bad ass too, but I deff use the camcorder more.

Re: [GreenMachine] Camera Complications
so you put the blame on the camera because of this morons "forgot" to take a look see on the groundUnimpressed...it`s like taking 15 gainers from a 300feet antenna.."oh fuck, i forgot to check the heights on it"

well..i read this list once back in 2004 when the number was below 100 and have never read it since then, neither do i planing to do it...i only notice that someone goes in every weeks or months.. whatever, i don`t care anymore

Re: [santamaria] digital camera or videocamera?
As my film professor would say, recording motion pictures onto anything other than actual emulsive surfaces is not filming it. It's video, not film. :D Of course, here in Boulder they're elitist poopers.

Those five fatalities resulted from striking an object in freefall or with a non-inflated canopy...they did not result from camera flying.

My 3 Cents
Video
I have 2 Sony PC-101s with
3 different Royal Lenses:
0.5x, 0.3x, and 0.2x

Stills
Canon Rebel XT
20-55 Wide Lense
Tongue Switch

Other Tools
Camera Helmet by 2k Composites
Camera Jacket by Freakin' Suits
Hand-Cam by Quality Rigging
$20 tri-pod from Walmart

All of these items have worked very well for me.

I agree with the sentiments of other mature and
experienced jumpers who believe that adding the
extra distraction of flying with cameras should
not be attempted by novices.

Re: [hjumper33] Camera Complications
When I was a begginers jumping at twin fall 3 years ago, I seen an instructor, I forgot his name , Tom Ayello told me that he didn't had good repution , teach a beginners to make his first jump, and the guy had a full face helmet with a video on, for his first jump!!!
I couldn't stop myself to say to the jumper " hey I don't think that you should be preoccupied about a video for your first jump. He didn't bother and went head down big time, but ok.
