Cutting off multi rings
Hey,
Any reason to leave on the multi rings when i'm sure I will never use them? I do not plan on ever selling the canopy either so i'm not worried about possibly decreasing it's value.
They don't get in the way but i'm wondering if the small amount of weight they put on the cells there attached to could hesitate that cell from inflating compared to the ones next to it without the rings and reinforcement tape?
Similar to the reason I hear you should not use a pilot chute with a cap when going hand held because it could cause the PC to flop to one side impeding inflation....

Any one done this?
Thanks.

Re: [Naptown] Cutting off multi rings
Hi, I ordered the multi set-up (years ago); but when I saw how bulky it was, I never used it. I've never had a problem on slider up or down with hesitation. The rings are still there, I never bothered cutting them off.

not really an answer, but...

I have only a handful of jumps on a multi canopy - and I don't care for it. I also think they the rings are fairly heavy. More then anything else to me it would be the same as the excess brake line - once you have your toggles set - don't you fingertrap it ? why have useless shit hanging around. K.I.S.S. , right ?

Re: [Naptown] Cutting off multi rings
I dont think the multi does any good, and i think it overcomplicates a system that is already way to complicated. the relativly new style of final folding to 'pre-strip' the center cell as well as folding the ears underneath does more good than a multi can IMHO.

that said, someday you might change your mind.

when i was learning to pack BASE gear, I was taught to sport pack. i tried flat packing once, and didn't like it. one of my 'mentors' showed me how he cut all of the packing tabs off the canopy, leaving small nubs of bar-tacked tab anchors. I almost did it, and actualy cut the center cell C-line tab, but only that one. it would get in the way of the pins with my old packjob.

now i flat pack, and cant stand the idea of going back to the sport pack flaking. Im really glad my old rig still has tabs.

OR, just cut the metal rings off. and if it ever goes back on, just girth hitch the fabric onto the fabric tab. halfways solves the weight problem.

I would at least leave the tabs on there. You may change your mind in the future. I personaly think the best part of the multi is the fourth attachment point farther back on the tail to lift the tail pocket.

Re: [Naptown] Cutting off multi rings
If my memory serves me correctly, the Flik w/multi only has one metal ring on the primary attachment point. I called Todd a BR (Apex) several years ago and he said it was no big deal to cut the other three rings off my FOX multi attachment points. I never had any problems. That being said, I'm not a believer in the multi anymore. But that's just my opinion.

That's awesome, someone had to do it. I thought about doing a 140ft wooden fire tower once-upon-a-time but didn't. I was confident it was possible, but not confident enough to do it. Good on ya.

Does anyone know why it is only the new Fliks that only have one ring for the multi - or do new Foxes have the same thing?
