World record attempt
Since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned here yet...

Tomorrow, October 27 (at 10.00 MSK?), a world-record synchronized BASE jump attempt will be made in Moscow, Russia. Weather permitting, jumpers will make a synchronized leap from both the Ostankino television tower http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostankino_Tower and the under-construction Federation Tower http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_Tower.

Roughly 50 jumpers are expected to participate in the world record attempt. AFAIK, this will be the first time legal BASE jumps have been organized from Ostankino television tower since 2004.

Feel free to join in by jumping your local object at precisely 10.00 AM MSK (02.00 AM EST, for all you Americans). SmileSmile It'd be cool to see an unofficial tally of how many people around the rest of the world also participate (even though they wouldn't all be synchronized down to the second).

I hear that 46 participants made a safe and successful jump.

Congratulations to all.

Re: [NZflygirl] World record attempt
unfortunately there was an accident participant has some injuries after bad landing with some problems with lines (probably knot)

Re: [baldas] World record attempt
From the video, it looks like he had 2 linetwists low in the risers (a foot from the rings, in front of his face). Canopy is fully inflated, slider is against the stops, lines seem to be fine. However, the canopy is close to stall. Near the ground, he releases one toggle and quickly pulls it and then lets it go, making the canopy fly erratically and drop him on the ground.

It almost looks from the video like he has a sideways step-through.
Continuity check?

Hope he's okay!

It looks like the canopy was flying pretty good until he grabbed a toggle. One lesson here "might be" sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone.

Any video of the 46-way?

Nick, did you notice the fence in the back? Looks like he was going right at it... It might have been the reason for his actions. Hitting that fence would have been pretty ugly as well.

Hope he's ok Unsure

Yes, I should have said, "he was in the saddle and only he knew what trigger to pull." It was more just a general observation of the canopie's behavior.

There is, at least for the moment, a video posted at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/video_and_audio/default.stm

It is a pretty low-quality video, but it does at least make it clear that there was no 46-way jump. The jumpers decided that weather conditions did not allow for a massive multi-way, so there was no record attempt. They jumped singly, or at most in twos or threes.

I would try to figure out a direct URL for the video, but it doesn't seem worth it as the quality is so poor.

Re: [inzite] World record attempt
First of all nobody planned to make a new record. We just made one small Russian fest to celebrate 40 years of Ostankino TV Tower. Also we were thinking to synchronize first jump from TV tower and jump from Federation business center. Maybe, in few years if we will find enough experienced jumpers we'll try to make a new record, but this event was just a presentation of BASE jumping as not dangerous sport, to contact with new administration, and make the international MBOA possible next years. So, now they are ready to speak about MBOA next summer and we hope to make it real.Cool

Looks like a nice three and a half minute TV clip (again from NTV). Good to see them portraying BASE jumpers as normal, professional athletes instead of crazy wahoos.

Well, that is technically what it is - a giant antenna. It was built for that purpose, and that is still its primary function. Although, I can definitely see how it is more a B than an A in the sense of how it is constructed. I've always wondered whether jumpers consider it an A or a B.
Shortcut
Re: [stevenm] World record attempt
yea. me too.
in my log book its B and you jump it from 345 / 362 height, not from the top 511 antenna. if we think all buildings which has antenna on the top as A there would be a lot of them...
