Advice?
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out or give me any advice. I'm seventeen years old and I'm hoping to get into BASE. I know y'all might not want to help me because I've done this before and I got flamed out of my mind. Everyone said I need to do some research and stop trying to get answers handed to me, which I understand but that was two years ago, anyway. I've read a lot of stuff and I still am. I'm planning to start skydiving my eighteen birthday and then working my way to my license. I've look at Johhny Utah's and the Twin falls FJC's, of course I know I have a ways to go before I get there I was just interested.

Is there anything you guys would suggest? I just want to know what may help me get started. Also, does anyone know any websites with BASE termonology. I've understood somethings but the difference between risers and toggles and slider-ups and slider-downs. I just want to know if there's any websites with some BASE terms.
Thank you guys

where do you plan on skydiving?
even if they won't let you jump yet, you can hang out. plenty of folks learned how to pack younger than you. become part of the group!

plus, you'll see a ton of stuff you might miss when you jump. then you are focused on what YOU are doing. you will learn a ton of subtle things missed by those cranking out 100 jumps/month.

Re: [wwarped] Advice?
Id say start learning about about some skydiving gear if you want to get a head start on things. Going to the DZ and meeting the people there is an excellent idea as already mentioned.

If you want to start with some reading, try the USPA SIM's or CSPA PIM's (these are parachute information manuals, which start at the basics)

Try getting a grasp on the skydiving side of things then gradually learn the BASE side..

Go learn how to paraglide, you can start under 18. You won't learn the necessary freefall skills obviosly, but you will learn alot of canopy control, and much more in deapth information about turbulance, weather etc that will come in handy. Plus you'll get to untangle big nylon bags, which comes in handy when you have to throw your gear in the back of a car to get away from the copsAngelic

"plenty of folks learned how to pack younger than you. become part of the group! "

"I'd say start learning about about some skydiving gear if you want to get a head start on things.

"learn how to pack canopyes, you can make mony from it to pay your skydives and you´ll learn how to pack"

My tip for you is along the same line:

Before you ever step out of an airplane. Become a rigger at your soon to be "home DZ". Do it now, before you make your 1st jump.

You will be light years ahead of 99.9% in your quest for knowledge than most in the sport of parachuting.
If you work for that riggers license and get it in the next year or 2. that is proof that you did not get it handed to you. Proof that you worked for it.

Keep BASE questions away from your "home DZ" and do not let them know your intentions until you have sussed out the situation or they will probably diss you also.

In your quest to become a rigger, most answers should come to your questions about BASE. Whether through technical knowhow or through the BASErs you will meet in your quest.
Don't get lost in rigging and forget to skydive.
Hope this helps.
take care,

Re: [Ayden77] Advice?
There's no terminology list online but I did do one for a wuffo magazine some years ago, and maybe we can just start another one here . . .

LookSee N. What you do after driving past a local object you've never seen before. Example, "I'm going down there tonight for a LookSee . . ."

DaFuckZeGoing, A. Said when everybody on a building jump turns right under canopy (towards a pre-arranged LZ) but then someone suddenly turns left. Example, "WTF, DaFuckZeGoing ???"

Jean Boenish's Bedroom, Phrase, Radio code used between jumpers and ground crews. It means all's quiet, no one's around, and it's cool to jump. Sometimes shortened. Example,
"Howzit look?
"It's Jean's Bedroom."
"Okay, standby, ten seconds!"

Artillery Strike, Phrase. Coined by BASE jumper Don Swayze while jumping alone from an urban tower. He almost severed his foot in the tower strike (it was later amputated) and even though he didn’t want to burn the tower he was quickly bleeding out and was forced to call 911 for rescue. Example, "It was like calling in an artillery strike on my own position."
Any more?

Re: [Ayden77] Advice?
you should buy Radix at www.jimmyhalliday.com within lies a tutorial of all you will need to know for your first jump at twin falls including the vocab list you wish to attain:

tarp= parachute

seatbelts= what attaches tarp to backpack

backpack= backpack in which you store your tarp for freefall

yonkles= handles occasionally useful for steering the tarp.

seriously, watch the scene of shane teaching a student. dial in the vocab, memorize the drill, buy a base rig go to twin falls idaho.

Alright thank you guys very much. This has all been very helpful. I've ordered the SIM and I've contacted my local DZ to see what I can do there until I'm old enough to skydive. But I'm always opening if anyone wants to give anymore advice.
Thanks again guys.

Get yourselves a decent education before you ruin your life, trowing yourself off everything and anything! Get a base where you get time off, and decent pay! When you reach that base, you can start having fun. Being a skydive bum rest of your life is hard work, and not always the easiest way to make alot of base jumps!
