RedBull stunt/PR Fluff - Cedric claims new record

Cedric Dumont - World Record B.A.S.E. in Belgium

Just under a second is how long Cedric Dumont’s most recent project took, a B.A.S.E. jump from a viaduct that was only 34 meters tall. The reward for the busy Belgian? A new European record. The lower the object, the higher the risk of jumping from it is. This bit of wisdom, which doesn’t seem elucidating in the first instance, is a basic rule for B.A.S.E. jumpers if they want to survive.
“If there’s any kind of problem, you’ve got no time to react,” explains Cedric Dumont about the perils of B.A.S.E. jumps from low heights. The undesired result he explains in quite a vivid way: “A split second delay in opening the parachute, and you’re dead.”

New European record

The Belgian, who once jumped from the Eiger north wall in a wing suit, still loves testing the limits: In 2006 he jumped from a 35-meter high bridge in Ireland. Now, with a jump from the Viaduc de Vilvoorde in Brussels, he has just lowered the limit of the possible by yet another meter. Between his initial jump and the safe landing were only 34 meters. Dumont thus holds the new European record for the lowest B.A.S.E. jump with a landing on solid ground.

B.A.S.E. in the lowlands

“I actually thought I’d reached the limit in Ireland in 2006,” said Dumont. “But after weighing up all the factors for ages, after tedious calculations and the development of a special parachute, I decided to go even lower.” For Dumont, the jump from Viaduc de Vilvoorde was part of a long-term project called “B.A.S.E. in the lowlands,” in the course of which he wants to jump from as many objects in Belgium as possible.

The landing looks like a good way of damaging one's spine. Whatever happened to PLFs?

Well... not really a record...
2 italians (who choiced to remain anonymous) did a jump off 25meters over concrete...
Not bad the 34m jump, but not a record... Tongue

Are any of these low jumps freefalls?

They must have done too many tandems where the TI tells them to pull their feet up, thus not being used to actually using the landing gear... I feel sorry for their spine too.Tongue

Cedric was not the first to jump this object. Other belgians jumped this bridge before him! The claim in the belgian newspapers that he was the first is definitely not true!

Please, have a look at the thread "Italian very low BASE jump: 25 m - 82 ft off a 27 B.C. object", I put few pictures captured out of the video the authors of the jump sent me few months ago Cool
Pictures of the 2 jumpers who did the achievement Cool

"Go Fast Basejump from only 22 meter (71ft)"

The youtube URL jump is lower then the italian job, by 3 meters. However, in that case the bag was held above the jumper by an 1 or 2 meters. And it was done above sand.

Cedrics jump was nice and low, but for media only. The same bridge has been jumped before, several times. Even by a US couple.

Anyway, going that low is not my cup of tea.

That changes EVERYTHING. Sand and asphalt are COMPLETELY different "means".

So low, not mine too. Consider that #1044 and #1088 are VERY fit, they are a bunch of very well trained muscles, beyond the fact that they are very keen on SL and DB and PLF techniques Cool
Furthermore, I think that the "drive" that made them do that 25 m jump is the historical issue to jump an object manufactured in 27 B.C. by Romans, that adds a particular fashination to the jump itself.
I jumped myself a B manufactured in 11th century, and I can guarantee that that jump was VERY DIFFERENT from all the other modern B's I have jumped Wink
It was an incredible emotion to have my feet on such an ancient piece of stone Wink, maufactured by people lived 1000 years ago Wink

There is nothing mediocre in jumping a 35 meter object, but claiming etc. for sure is...

I am not saying 35m is mediocre, it was his claim that I was poking fun at. There have been lower jumps and this bridge had been done before.....
I ground crewed for two friends jumping a local 35m span over frozen ground in -18C about 5-6 years ago. Between the 2 of them they pulled off 2 S/L's and one TARD. I just find it amusing when people claim to be the first even when they must know they were not...........
Me? I won't even claim to be mediocre. I am very happy in the "proven" middle ground of BASE.
MY lowest is 54m and I cannot see myself going any lower unless there were some pretty special circumstances.
