no no no, nothing new. captain dumbass alex was the only one so far. but we had a kid drop his laser-cut electronicaly-encoded keys from his paragliding harness up at 9000' over boulder. probably killed some dirty hippie on the street down there. its all the same shit.

seriously, who the fuck thinks its a good idea to jump with car keys in your pocket?
Shortcut
Re: [Calvin19] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
All my jumps (~60) have been done with keys in my pockets (cell phone and keys in front pockets, wallet in rear). Most jumps are done in jeans.

I find that the harness tends to cover the pocket openings pretty tight, and have never worried about losing my keys or cell phone. A lot of things would have to go wrong to make that happen (serious head down, leg straps not tightened, etc.). Hell, it's usually a PITA just to get my cell phone INTO the front jeans pocket after calling ground crew before the jump.

Of course, if you have holes in your pockets, or jump with keys in a shirt pocket, then you deserve to lose your keys. Sly

Re: [inzite] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
At least for urban jumping (and all less than legal jumps) hiding the keys under your car is better. That way if you get busted climbing or landing your car will still be there when you get out of jail.

Otherwise it usually gets towed . . .

I do! Leaving your keys with your car when jumping in the city is a bad idea. It's asking to get the car stolen AND invalidates insurance. What if you get busted and spend a night in the cells. All that time with your keys under the wheel arch? And if you leave the keys under the car or ontop of the wheel, if it gets towed they'll be left behind for someone to pick up and walk away with and then you're screwed.

And what's wrong with putting keys in a secure pocket?

Re: [sabre210] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
Because if your buddy drove, then flew his wingsuit over some water, had line twists, and had to land on the other side which was completely impossible to get directly back from, it would have been useful to have a car to go look for him. 3.5 hours later, and many called in favors at 7am on a saturday, we finally picked him up at the highway 5 miles away.

Re: [sabre210] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)

Ya, you know it's surprisingly cheap and easy to have a spare hidden key on the vehicle, well worth it just in case... (unless it's one of those laser-cut electronically encoded deals)

Re: [tr027] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
But that jumper will remain anonymous (see above poster) If only that had been the worst part of that day...
Shortcut
Re: [hjumper33] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
I suggest giving an extra key to your jump partner.

Get it back because, days later, your buudy won't remember what that extra Toyota key is and will throw it out. f-kn short term memory

Re: [Calvin19] Rules of BASE jumping. (Non-technical)
anyone who does not leave their keys at the car (not in the ignition with the doors unlocked you ignorant inbred flatlanders, in a hiding place where they cannot be found, a spare one is a great idea)...
anyone who does not leave the keys at the car is asking for it, and deserves to get tar-feathered by their buddies on the jump with them when they lose them.

this rule has been around for as long as cars have been used to get to and from doing cool things. climbing, kayaking, SKYDIVING, backpacking, etc, etc.

Let it be know that on this day, Calvin19 said skydiving is cool. He even used all caps.

I never said skydiving was not cool.

i just said the simple act of jumping out an airplane and surviving the trip to the ground with a normal skydive rig is so insanely idiot-proof, it lost its appeal.

You missed my point somewhat. The above scenario isn't relevent if you're talking about a 180ft building in the city is it? In other words, certain types of jumps have certain types of additional risks attached and having your car stolen because someone watched you leave the keys with it, is as valid a risk as the one you mentioned above.

BASE is surely about weighing up the risks against the benefits. Sometimes it's riskier to have your keys with you, sometimes it isn't.

RULE 5 : Tailor the plan to suit the jump, not the jump to suit your pre-determined plan.

thats a good rule. but it has nothing to do with car keys.

if your god and have never ever lost you car keys, then go ahead, jump with them all you want.

but car keys not only get lost, but people forget where they are on their person. on a city 180' jump, dont you want to know exactly where your keys are before you jump? what if your buddy jumps first and the cops come before you can jump? does he hide behind the dumpster or get into your car cause the keys were with the car all along?

fuck, dont even put the keys hiden on the car, put them under a rock, under a dumpster wheel, anywhere right next to the car.

there really is no reason to bring you keys anywhere.

a jump should always have a plan, but in BASE, it only goes according to what the plan was as you left the car how often?

it does not matter really. its not like im going to be jumping with someone who has their SUV keys stuck in their pocket thats covered up by the leg strap as we are trying to get away anytime soon. CrazyTongueAngelic

Rule #6...

Your ground crew must be old enough to drive, and sober, especially on an early morning jump...

It sucks having to knock on the farmer's door asking for the use of his tractor because some jump-mate's punk brother ran your car into the ditch...

In this case, subset rule 6B. If your ground crew sucks, take the fucking keys with you so you can use your car when you need it, especially with an unpacked parachute.

No, I will not give you the video of my car in the ditch as seen under canopy.Tongue

This is why jumpers learn to do something besides
just survive like turn points, freefly, track, swoop, etc.

I still eat chocolate, have sex, and watch movies
and none of those activities are likely to kill me Tongue

actualy, that really was the only reason for the post, even thought that happened a year ago. and the car keys loss only happened on one cross country paragliding trip.

but dont worry. whenever we jump with alex from now on, i have put a tracking beacon and an un-imaginable amount of glowsticks on him so we can watch and find him no matter what. he is also only able do one-ways, for that reason.
