Shortcut
Toggles or rears
What controls do you use?

1. Right after opening you realize you are on a collision course with something (wall, wire, another canopy, etc)

2. Right after opening you realize you are headed away from a clear landing area.

Re: [Bolas] Toggles or rears
hmmm... i dont know man, this one gets too complicated.

it really depends on how close you are to the object your going to hit, or how high above the ground you are, or whatever way the LZ is, or whatever way the best place to crash land is, etc.

Re: [Bolas] Toggles or rears
Prior to my accident last year I would not have thought twice about this, Risers, Risers, Risers... Since the accident I have read many different theories on which is better and I think I would not have been hurt from the landing had I gone to toggles instead of risers. However I might have been hurt from hitting the object.

It hs been said that you don't swing out as much from a riser turn, but the velocity induced by swinging back under my canopy prior to impact was what caused my injury, and I guarantee I was on risers. With both toggles in hand I think the turn could have been much flatter than risers and I would have a much larger control range for landing.

But what if I missed a toggle or had a toggle hangup. Even with BigGrab toggles it is a possibility and that extra few seconds means everything. And then there's the whole issue of flight characteristics with DBS's. Popping the toggles and pulling both controls down to stop forward movement and then letting off one side allows that side to accellerate and may induce a faster, flatter turn where rear risers may have little effect until some forward speed is achieved which is difficult and time consuming when the brakes are set deep, that's why they are set deep in the first place.

So next time what will I do? I don't know and this is the kind of indecision that makes me uncomfortable, not to mention injures and kills people. When there are things to think about, like how close am I to the object, how much altitude do I have, am I going to hit it, can I land here or there now that I'm in this situation..., then time is consumed quite rapidly. I think the most beneficial thing is to have thought through these things prior to exit and stick with what you've planned. This has you taking action rather than considering alternatives.

Re: [tfelber] Toggles or rears
Tony,

Keep in mind that you had very shallow BS when you had your incident. Hence your risers were more efficient and your tarp further away from the stall point.

Given the circumstances (SBS), low object, off-heading... I think you did great and if you have landed in soft grass rather than hitting that rock, probably you'd have been OK because your riser flare was good, i.e. you did not stall.

Now that you have tuned in your DBS I encourage you to go for the toggles fist, unless circumstances dictate other wise.

Re: [nicknitro71] Toggles or rears
Nick has a valid point - how deep your brake settings are really does make a difference to responsiveness. It's a trade-off: the deeper they are the slower you drive back at the object (obviously) but the less responsive to rears the canopy will be in "half" brakes.

Try turning away on rears at Yellow Ocean and see how quickly the trees come up to greet you. It is slightly overhung and you have some time; toggles would be better surely.

Re: [Pendragon] Toggles or rears
1. Whatever my hands reach first.I usually have my toggles in hand before I'm conciously aware of it on opening....but If I'm that close to a strike....I'm not going to be trying to make the 'textbook' decision in preference to doing 'something' quickly

2. Usually toggles...but input on rears works just fine as long as you dont bury them...use gentle inputs
