They (the rangers) don't recognize it as a waste as long as it is our resources. Yes, we are becoming a police state fast...

And I'll bet Sandy was all out of breath and excited about catching some bad people.

You know years ago, about the time Frank Gambalie died, I started mentioning to people, that no matter where you were, downtown or in the park, not to run away. If you're caught, you're caught, just stand there and take it like you weren't doing anything wrong. I was really worried, and I still am, that sooner or later they are going to start shooting at us.

But it never worked, not even for me. My feet would get going while my brain was still standing there . . .

I don't dislike Park Rangers because its fashionable or I have an authority problem. I don't like them because of the way they've treated me and my friends going back over twenty years. And I can't faithfully put myself in their shoes because I don't believe parachuting, especially from a publicly owned bridge, is a crime.

Re: [434] Ranger's Score Two . . .
Personally, I look at it as, they have a job that they're getting paid to do. Just as most of us have. Not everybody loves their job. However, they're getting paid to do it. If they choose to neglect their duties, then they won't have a job much longer. Only they (rangers) know, how many times, if any, they've turned a blind eye to other jumpers. I've personally been on both sides. One where a ranger was totally cool, and some where they've been total dicks.
Just because someone is a cop/ranger, or an Outlaw, doesn't make them a dick. We shouldn't take it personal if we fuck up and get caught, just as they shouldn't take it personal if we choose to jump.
The problem is not with them doing their job. The problem is with their job description/duties. We need to have the freedom to choose to jump.
Until we have that freedom, they have to do their job.

If they were just doing their job they'd be issuing permits.

I don't want to offend you... but I can't believe this can be coming from a BASE jumper's mouth. "I'm not a killer of civilians, I was told to launch the missile, I'm just doing my job." There's no excuse to causing trouble to any innocent human being. A pig is a pig, period.

Re: [yuri_base] Ranger's Score Two . . .
No offense, but the truth is, they're just doing their job.

What we need to do, is get bustin BASE jumpers off their list of duties they have to do.

In reply to:

Your not innocent if your breaking the law. The law banning BASE jumping on NPS land without a permit, (which they won't issue) is fuckin bullshit!! The fact that they(rangers) are required to enforce it, doesn't make them any less human than you are I.

Re: [yuri_base] Ranger's Score Two . . .
If you don't like breaking the law, then don't do it. BASE jumping in National Parks is illegal. If you think the authorities are going to accept your personal protest, you're wrong. If you're going to do something illegal be willing to pay the price for it... and do your best not to get caught. If you do get caught, accept the fact that you did something illegal, and fucked up. In which case, the authorities are smarter, faster, and more efficient than you are. You failed, you lost, you gambled and now you have to pay. If you get mad at the opposition for, de facto, being the opposition, you don't deserve to play.

The fact that law enforcement do their jobs keeps BASE a sport for those who are willing to pit their minds and skills against an organized force... oh yeah and the laws of nature. For those unwilling to do that, or unwilling to accept those risks, there are other sports that don't involve such risks.

Sorry man, but certain jumps require certain skills. Sometimes those skills are in access, exit, tracking, opening, canopy flight, landing, and sometimes they're in getting away with it. If you don't like the fact that there are people keeping you from access or getting away from it, go find jumps that don't require it. But don't begrudge people from doing their job.

If you don't like the law or the fact that the law exists: go find a way to change the law. You're hardly going to find transcendental Thoreau types claiming that by jumping in NPS land you're 'fighting the good fight', when in fact you're doing it for self aggrandizement or simply personal pleasure. Perhaps if you were truly fighting injustice you might find a following, but until you play their game on their terms... or should I say "your game on your terms" in a (*cough*) democratic (*cough*) society, you have little to complain about, considering its the rules of 'the people'.

While you may consider those who enforce the law to be somehow less than human, consider their motivations. Then consider your own in how you earn a living. Perhaps you'll find more similiarities than differences.

Looking beside all about they doing their job etc, maybe they got a kick out of chasing BASE jumpers?

For those of you who saw this post from another name.....
I am using his computer and forgot to log him out...sorry

ORIGINAL POST- Since I am lazy and could not write it any better I gotta say, Raistlin and Lonnie have nailed it IMHO of course.
Sure, some are dicks by nature and shouldn't be rangers or any other "public" employee but at the same time,
there are some real dickhead BASE jumpers out there too and their numbers are growing...............

Re: [SkyDaemon] Ranger's Score Two . . .
Altitude, Access, Landing Area....

The three things needed for any jump.. so I have no problem that the game is to acquire all three in order to get off somthing. The cards are on the table and you make your choice or find another object.

I don't have a problem with these ppl doing their jobs and arresting jumpers as it's the game we play if we choose, I have a problem with the bias at which they apply to their public-servant-taxpayer-funded jobs.

If they were doing their jobs, 428 wouldn't have experienced this.

Probably more true than us humans want to believe.

I had an employee pull some crazy stuff at a customer's location. The customer's employees, from their IT department, suddenly became Detective Joe. They climbed trees next to the building, dressed in all urban black camo, and spied on our employee.

They caught our employee climbing a fence inside the warehouse, opening the door, taking a pallet jack out side and surfing the 1,000 pound piece of metal down the sidewalk at 20MPH. Our employee rocked, he controlled the jack like nobody's business, including dropping the forks just in time to stop before the gravel started.

I got us fired from the account. I said to the customer, "I am offended our employee was so stupid and disrespected your property. But I am more offended by your employee's commentary on the soundtrack of the video. They truly enjoyed the hunt, they are taking great thrill about this guy getting fired. This guy has a family he is supporting, they should be sad, not happy, that they caught him being stupid."

If you want further proof, look at reality TV. We live vicariously thru the hunting of man in the TV shows, "Cops", "Dog the Bounty Hunter" and "Dateline NBC: To Catch A Predator."

Law enforcement has a job to do, they cannot turn a blind eye to any one law or group of laws being broken. You can't blame any one employee for enforcing a law...

But, it is not just law enforcement, but human kind in general, that gets a thrill in "catching someone".
