Goddamn lawbreaking delinquents
Did my first terminal jump this morning. My buzz was quickly squashed as I returned to my car to find the window smashed out, my dashboard mangled to rip out my CD player, and my iPod and wallet missing out of my center console. Anyone have any tips to avoid identity theft problems? All that was in the wallet were credit cards that have been canceled, and a student ID and drivers license.

Get ahold of one of the credit reporting agencies listed below and put a fraud alert on your credit file. Putting it on one of the three should trigger it to be put on the other two.

The fraud alert works by make a note on your credit report so that they (the credit agencies) have to call you when a credit check is ran. This way you can verify that you wanted an account opened. Thus, you should get a call if someone else tries opening an account in your name. The down side is it's a pain if you yourself try to get an account opened - but that's a small price to pay so that some ID theif can't do it without your knowledge.

Periodically get a copy of your credit report so that you can eyeball it and see if any strange acounts have popped up that you don't know about.

As for your credit cards - make sure they are canceled and also make sure they stil have your current and valid address on file. Some ID Thiefs will try to get the address changed to them.

Search the web - there are lots of sites explaining what to do in the case of ID theft. But getting the fraud aleart put on your credit reports right away is a smart move.

I think you call also call the Social Security Administration and have a similar fraud warning put on your social security number. Check their web site for that information.

Or simply freeze your credit permanently:

...you can unfreeze it for a small fee. Don't forget to freeze your kids' credit as well.

I hear frozen paintballs are a very effective deterrent. Their use only warrants mild legal recourse as well. Wink
