current thoughts/preferences on full face helmets
I'm thinking (again) about getting a full face helmet.

anyone jumping one they love? hate? why?

I see Protec makes an Ace Spade. any thoughts? (probably has no proper crash ratings...)

thanks!

Re: [wwarped] current thoughts/preferences on full face helmets
I have an ace spade. It is rated by whoever rates bike helmets. I don't think bike helmets can be sold without it.
as far as the helmet goes, I think it depends on what type of jumping you want to , and how much decrease in vision you are ready to deal with. I wouldn't recomend it for doing aerials, except on delays where you are not pitching without tracking after the rotations. For flat and stable jumps I still haven't made up my mind, it's good but the lack of peripheral vision both side to side and up and down makes me nervous.
I had a bridle wrap while using this helmet, it didn't contribute directly to the problem. But i had a hard time seeing to clear the wrap.

Re: [wwarped] current thoughts/preferences on full face helmets
no, i dont. i where one for paragliding in the winter, but thats it.

BASE has a much higher need for full face for sure.

but only half of us, mostly the guys who started jumping more than 3 years ago it seems, only where a helmet and boots. if that, even in moab.

full face is just way to hot, in the summer PG waiting to launch for an hour in 110 weather. i guess in BASE we have no excuse.

besides, full face doesnt look very BASE at all. protec buckets look sweet, or 661.

I have a 661 full comp, I love it. Removed the visor and it's beautiful. Haven't taken it to terminal yet but it feels pretty light and will definitely protect my pretty face Smile

When I feel I need a full face I wear my
Charley Insider .

Its a Paragliding helmet thats light and tough. It is a certified helmet for flight and has lots of material under the shell for impact absorbtion.

The chin guard has a good few cms extension past your jaw ( read ability to crumple before your jaw does) and has an extra wide field of view left/right.top and bottom....I never had any issues with having vision restricted.

Comes with sturdy chin strap and snap.

I have jumped it sub terminal and terminal....with no problems

Takes up a bit more room in the stash bag than a non full face helmet....but its not any heavier.

I have exactly the same helmet (Charly Insider). Had a cliff strike in it... and walked away. No head injuries. Have a 661 MTB full-face too, which is just as good. Neither really impede vision.

Full face helmets are surely a must if you're jumping cliffs slider up.

I've got a Bell Bellistic which I like very much. Just take off the visor. But I haven't jumped any other full face helmets.

Don't own one, but this looks interesting. Kind of a hybrid between full and open.

Here are some more helmets to check out.

I tried on the "Pryme US" full-face this morning. Plenty of peripheral vision, lots of padding and not too heavy. Plus, it has a cool skull molded into the chin-guard. It's about $75 US w/o tax.

I've tried several full face helmets and my firm vote goes to the Charly Insider for spec, weight, peripheral vision, fit and comfort.

Now if only someone could tell me how to mount a small Sony camcorder on top without having to add a ton of aluminium plates and slidy release things etc.

I'm currently looking into doing that with my 661 full comp full face. I haven't figured out the specifics yet but was thinking of seeing if Cookie's Liquid Flatlock would site nicely on top of my helmet. Would sure make things easy if it worked.

hi john,

Unfortunately the Poly block wont conform (to an unknown curved surface). It would tend to bend the plate as you try to compress it. Unfortunately the specs on this part are quite critical and it only really works on our helmets. We have a different part for the different size shells even.

Hope this helps,

Hmmmm.... I might just take my helmet to them at the next boogie and try a couple of different sizes, we'll see what happens.

John...further thoughts
Bolt a mounting screw through the top of the helmet and build yourself a small fibreglass/resin cradle for it to sit in ...
You could make a temp mold using expanded polystyrene

If you can imagine the cam held to the top of the curved helmet top by just one bolt....the front and back of the cam would stick out off the surface of the helmet.
The cradle would be there to just support and 'hide' these parts of the cam.

Doesnt take into account a solution for protecting the cam itself...perhaps a cookie comps cam box et al?

Having a Charley Insider I'm gonna tell you that any cam top mounted is going to stick up quite a bit....not at all an ideal set up for lugging it around ina stash bag or moving around more enclosed spaces with it on..
