ADK's book
Some of you might know him He is one of the pioneers of BASE in our country, a very very cool guy.
"I felt I had something to say that was different from the standard climbing literature genre. Even although climbing literature if filled with the most amazing stories of survival, fortitude, determination, and a hint at the reasons why we do these things, I felt I needed to explore why we do these things from a subjective, and very much a narrative perspective, and this kind of philosophy is a little lacking in the standard formula of experiential accounts of trips and expeditions to high places around the world.
This book goes into the whys. It tells of the raw fear you feel as you stand on the edge of a cliff about to jump off with a parachute strapped to your back. It tells of climbing up large mountains in the Himalayas and Alaska knowing that your efforts are doomed to fail, but why we carried on anyway. It explores the intense connection with partners on the rope and in the air. The book describes success and failure, strong moments in high and wild places, and the lessons of friendship and simplicity which are all that remain long after the pain, adrenalin, fear and the intense joys have dissipated.
You won’t get bored, or even bogged down. Everything is distilled. It’s a book about real life.
