How do you like to skydive your BASE canopy?
So. I've done a search, and can't manage to find much mention of this. I'm about to make some skydives on the MDV Troll I'm buying, and I'm wondering what the best way to do it is, and looking for some opinions. Use the orriginal D-bag or POD, or omit them and just stow the lines in the tailpocket and freepack it, much like a CRW rig? Thanks in advance for the opinions guys and gals!

Sean LR

PS: I'm only doing clear and pulls, no freefall, and by BASE rig doesn't have tersh loops.

i recommend a full on free packed basepack and take it to terminal. if you are preparing yourself for basejumping get used to fukin rip roaring slammer openings.....

i love hard openings!!!!

*edited to add*
in basejumping the openings are supposed to kind of hurt a bit, its just to remind you that you are still alive.

If you can fit it in the rig using the rigs standard d-bag, pc etc., use it, if you can't, improvise. ie, free pack, use tail pocket, etc etc. Worked for me both ways. If you free pack it you will have to slow the opening down however you can, even with go and throw,as it will be hard, if you use d-bag just roll th nose a bit and use and slider stow and you can take it terminal no probs.

edited to add- in BASE jumping opening should be firm not back crackers, but not snivalers. If you need a back cracker to save your lfe you are going to low.

edit again to fix drunken mistakes

Free-pack it(with lines in tail-pocket) so you get use of this type of packing, soften your opening with a sail-slider, i don`t see the point with using mesh-slider in skydiving..

A little off-topic but along the same lines.

"Skydiving a BASE tarp quote from last weekend"

stitch:"How low you gonna take it??"

Kentucky basejumper:"Till I get scared". Cool

I was kind of thinking more along the lines of tailpocket/freepack, to get more used to it. Why do you recomend a sail slider though? If the mesh slider is to be used on terminal jumps, who not for getting used to it?

If I had a sail slider when I free packed my troll MDV into a rig, I would have used it, as for even a go and throw, the openings where hard, but admittedly I didn"t have much experience then. Recently I used a small mesh and a large mesh slider when I used a rig that I could use the d-bag with and didn't notice any difference. Have done the same experiment in the BASE environment and have had the same results. I use a large mesh for everything now, from 4 seconds to terminal. Using a combination of secondary/slider stows and rolling the nose you can get the out come you are after, even if it is having a back breaker to 'make you feel alive'.

for competent skydivers that do not have a rig big enough for a BASE canopy... i suggest the trash bag method. also, there is no need for re-rigging when you're done testing your canopy.

a quick pro pack shake, lay it down, stow the lines in the tailpocket, then fold it up into a trashbag.

put on your base rig, then your normal skydiving rig over it.

jump from plane and throw the bag.

well, it's not for everyone... but i like to keep things simple.Tongue

Use a bag if you can find one that fits, it'll make it lots comfier because the point isn't to get used to openings the point is to get used to flyin it.

When i did it i used a bag, and the fine mesh slider and just did hop and pops. it did good, i got to fly it, and it didn't hurt.

if you need practice packing, why not just pack and unpack a real rig a coupla times.

Both ways work, even a trash bag will work.

If you want to take it easy on yourself, ask your pilot for a real good cut.

I've even taken a canopy out of a 182 sliderless, though I don't recomend it.Sly

I just bought a used big jav and raven 2 reserve, slap my mojo in er and go for it. I use the dbag and skydiving PC, but keep the large hole mesh on it. Mostly cause I'm lazy and don't want to keep switching sliders. It's not that bad, provided you make sure you push the slider up all the way... Pirate

Sean

I did a few skydives on a FOX 245 (non-vented) before my course. I packed it skydive style into a D-Bag, etc. It was fine on the hop'n'pops, but I took it to terminal (large hole mesh) once, and it rocked me. I was surprised how much it hurt.

I later did a couple jumps on my BlackJack 260 and just stuck to hop'n'pops (as a vented canopy would have hurt even more)

I would say that it depends on what you want to do, if you want to get more of a feel for what terminal openings are going to be like, then by all means, free pack it. But if you want to do canopy drills and such, then just stick it in the D-bag. Better yet, try both, one one weekend, and the other the next. See what you like better.

Like someone else said, you can always practice packing technique on a real BASE container.

By-the-way, if you haven't seen this, it is a good place to start for canopy drills.

Hope that helps.

Practice the packob all you like out of an aircraft....its a different show on an 'edge' altogether, so I personally wouldnt use aircraft exits to judge a BASE canopy opening (heading performance etc)
But yeah...for practicing everything else....canopy time/driills etc...BlitzKrieg has got it sorted....I like that style man..Smile

Yeah, trying both would probably be the best, I'll probably do that. The garbage bag idea is sweet too!

I second the garbage bag.

a few notes worth taking - EXIT SMALL AIRPLANE, BACK TO THE PROP, but not too head high.

help the bag up, otherwise you build up too much airspeed.

My most recent Flik with a large mesh slider slammed me pretty well when i spent 3-4 seconds pushing the bag out of my burble.... probably didn't help that i was a Caravan either :)

p.s. it's still a good idea to throw on a sail slider if you have one. if not, cover your mesh slider with some tape. it should last for a few jumps.Wink

I've skydived a Mojo 280, FLiK 322 and FLiK 354 several times. For both the 280 and 322 I use a student Javelin, the d-bag and normal PC. Then I just pulled right off the step of a 182. I used the large mesh slide and had a regular ol' pro-pack job. Openings were brisk but not near as hard as my old Sabre.

The 354 required me to free pack it into the student rig. I just put the lines in the tailpocket and shoved as much material under the flaps as I could. It was fun freaking out all the students due to the fabric, risers and toggles that was still hanging out.

I never took any jump to terminal - that wasn't the point of the jump. I just wanted canopy time to do practice drills and, or course, practice landings and accuracy.

Heh, guess I forgot what you had in there.

Rig's great, I'll be out there next week as well.

Wouldn't that cause you to flip onto your back, because the relative wind is hitting you from behind? When exiting facing to the rear, you generally have to exit head-down so the relative wind hits you on your belly. Wouldn't you be risking an entanglement if the bag opened while on your back?

After you have more skydives and air time you will
find that you can exit really in any position without
loosing control or flipping.

Check out some footage from freefly and track dives
or better yet find some footage of a sick camera guy,
those guys can back fly while shooting video & stills.

The 4 times I left a cessna with my Mojo in a shopping
bag I exited with my back to the relative wind and had
no problems staying stable. Both arms were wrapped
around the bag. Soon as I cleared the tail I used my
hands to pull the bag off to release the canopy. Just
stuffed the bag down my t-shirt and was able to
re-use the bag a couple times.

As someone said earlier in this thread, this method
is NOT recommended for in-experienced skydivers!

what GREEN said - PLUS - SAFETY FIRST (no joke). ?

my MAIN reason was that I wanted to have the trashbag in a burble created by my body. nothing worse than the canopy getting hit by the air and myself getting a reputation for wrapping my canopies around other peoples airplanes :)

Agreed, every day of skydiving should start with a safety meeting...it's nice to have one between jumps as well
