a cincy jumper survives a tower strike.
the tower was a 270' freestander
the jumper had a normal stable launch
with slight tail/cross winds. after his 2 sec. delay his canopy opened w/ a full 180. he had no time to react once his risers untwisted and he landed on his ass on a 6" wide piece of steel. he then proceded to climb out on the steel to free his canopy. he had to cut it away, and it wasn't over yet. he had landed oposite the ladder so he crawled back to the ladder and started to climb down when he realized his canopy was stuck on the steel still. so, at the next level he climbed back out and freed his chute. then again climbed back to the other jumper who was waiting to lend a hand after climbing down in disbelief. all in all, it was a good jump with overtones of danger yet fun. no broken bones, just bruises. and, yes, i plan to go back and reconquer the tower in question. just give me a week to heal.

Sounds like a healthy combination of luck and a cool head helped you get away unscathed.

Anything you think could have been done to either avoid this incident or deal with it better? Or was this just a case of "shit happens"?

At that point this post loses all meaning since the statement is paradoxical. It's like saying "a normal soft landing".

Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't knock the fu(king thing over. It seems to me you'll go to extraordinary lengths to get 6" shoved up your a$$.

what's wrong with my launch? according to jimmy i was in good pos. but when the canopy opened it was flying straight at the tower. he said that it open and not even a second later i struck. i was looking almost away from the tower upon opening. as far as making fun, jimmy is in more shock than me, maybe. we are both surprised that's for sure. there was deffinately nothing to be done other than hope for a soft spot. lol

and lots of bruises. still had fun, i had always wanted to climb all over the steel structure of a tower. lol

was this the same tower i was working on not too long ago that i texted you about? if so, i'm glad you didnt get assraped by one of those death spikes we mounted up there..

and by the way, this is really creepy because when i was up there last, i kept imagining exactly how much it would suck to have an object strike and pound into the steel. I'm not even kidding; I was actually hanging there for about 5 minutes just visualizing your exact scenario.. crashing into the steel, hanging on for dear life, cutting away the canopy, etc.. I even pondered the odds of actually escaping in one piece, and concluded that they weren't all that great.

i was below the death spikes when i opened. and i landed on the inner portion of the structure. i might add that i may seem like i have belittled the situation, but i just knew and will always know that these things happen. i take the risk, i take the pain. but i do not really believe luck has anything to do with it. luck is some magic force that just does not exsist.
