Any warning signs on the canopy before the canopy damage? Was it the fabric tearing at the line attachment points, or lines breaking? Stitching, fabric, tape, etc???
Define "well used"???
(or another way of looking at it, in retrospect, were there any warning signs of the pending equipment failure?)
I was a part of this incident. And big parts of the responsibility lies on me. Im the instructor of the jumper and the canopie was mine. We have some factors that affected this happening.
1. Weather
No wind this day. Very strong updraft that gave some of us nice floaty tracks but also very hard openings.
2. Fall speed
Carl is a heavy guy, he falls fast and at this jump my instruction was to "go steep for a while to gain speed in the track", due to floaty position in the last jump. Carl then gave this jump an, about 8-9 second dive before he went into a hard and fast track. Then he pulled. The fall speed was very high.
3. Opening problems
The canopie opened very hard, not slider down, but well hard and also out of seequence, saying that 3 side-cells opened very hard and the rest came later in normal slider up snivel. THis put heavy -snap-force on the right fron rizer, wich in the end caused it to snap.
4. Well used canopie.
This canopie was my old and trusted friend for many years. But its old and WELL used. I have personally made about 830 jumps on this baby for about 9 years. I have made 3 line-changes on the stearing lines, but never on the other lines. The quality of the canopie was defenetly a factor in this matter.
In all, the combination of these factors caused the canopie to breake adn the jumper to end up on the ledge/bolder in the forest, with a lot of luck. His high experience in skydiving and his ability to stay cold and calm helped him to finish the landing in the best way. Also being a hard cunt, helped him not to injure him self on the landing.
Responsibility is mostly mine, letting him use this old rig, though I was jumping it my self only some days earlier.
anyway. thats the story. And yes , there is no way to climb down with out rope and equpment.
