Have you looked at flying to Singapore, then taking a train or a commuter flight?

It's very easy. The train from Singapore-KL (at least when I rode it) was pretty cheap, because it's primarily intended to bring Malaysian labor into Singapore.

Do check into getting a commuter flight (tickets can be purchased in the airport), though. At one point, they were very cheap (much cheaper than purchasing them from a computer in the US).

I would think $1600 round-trip to be quite reasonable from the east coast.

It's a long way, dude.

I did the KL-Singapore train too and it was very nice and convenient. I went with 1st class tickets and only paid about 65 malaysian ringits (night train was about double the price, but you got a nice bed and a small breakfast). It took about 7 hours.
