Packing at the exit
So, here is the story:

Two guys planned on a double header, two jumps in one night. The first was easy, climb a freestanding A, PCA exit, gravy landing.

They grabbed a couple tarps and entered a B that is under construction and has very minimal security. After hiking up a couple floors, set up the tarps on the dusty floor and packed their rigs. When done, folded up the tarps and set them with miscellaneous construction materials, and finished the climb up.

It was an excellent adventure over all. How do you rate the choice to pack in the B?

maybe ask in the rigging forum if they think it's a good idea to pack your only parachute in a dusty construction area

Did you miss that they laid out tarps? Or am I not getting something here? I don't really see a problem there. If they were kicking up dust or something I could see a problem.

Nice work Baseman and carpediem.

Just curious, but why the decision to pack there, and not at a more comfortable place, like say carpediem's Appartment?

Just to save time, or was it so that you could go on Dorkzone and post this poll?Wink

If the weather is decent to jump a B, you can just roll it over and not worry about packing and getting all the crap into your fabric...

and what if the fellas needed space to pack 2 rigs at the same time? perhaps it started to look like a pretty good idea

sounds like "Bill & Ted" had a most excellent adventure...

somehow I bet others have done it as well. we just never know as they keep it private, not public.

oh, and making it a poll - wow. do "Bill & Ted" have a burning need to jump, or do they have a burning need to seek approval/attention? will it be posted on youtube?

true.
we all get pumped by jumps. sometimes jazzed for hours. we can all get chatty over breakfast.

people share their stories here regularly. it is an interesting story, and refreshing by itself. my issue is the need to make it a poll, as if they wish to determine if they are really cool or not. if they were not seen, were not hurt, and returned home safe, it was a great BASE experience. share stories. all cool.

don't expect a grade. if you are jumping for the joy of jumping and personal satisfaction, it simply should not matter.

Maybe he should ask in the rigging forum if they think its a good idea to pack your only parachute in a grass field.

Or a small hotel room.

Maybe he should ask in the rigging forum if jumping your only parachute unpacked is a good idea.

Maybe he should ask in the rigging area if jumping off a B is a good idea.

Maybe he should ask in the rigging forum if fliking the Potato in the morning without notifying the sherrif is a good idea.

Maybe he should ask in the rigging forum if jumping a single parachute system is a good idea period.

And lastly, didn't he say he packed on tarps, thereby negating whatever dust might have been laying around?

Whatever. Laugh I'd jump with JP anyday.

Then again, with all the skydives listed on my profile, BASE skills are probably non-existent.

By the way, it's entirely possible I've packed on a dusty floor inside a B on the way to the top with dride and a guy named nate. It was no big deal given the circumstances. The guy watching the place was not about to walk up 40 plus flights of stairs.

Like I said. "Who cares?"

What? Does the OP want a cookie because they made a BASE jump, or packed somehwere "different"?

Quit Bragging. This ain't Christmas, and I don't care if you got a shinny new bike.

As to comparing our profiles, I've got BASE jumps, a rig packed and ready to go any time, I just think it's ridiculous to be bragging about this shit expecting a pat on the head. I also might choose not to advertise the fact I base in conjuntion with my location so prominately. My BASE jumps (or skydiving) doesn't define me, I define them. No wonder the DZ.com BASE Forum is a joke to most.

The crew I grew up with when learning much of what I did about BASE (YEARS before I made my first jumps) had some respect for the shadows they had to move in. The only color for a BASE rig was BLACK. Videos we're RARELY shown outside the sport, and objects were respected. I can't even jump the best objects near my hometown any more because of attitudes like the original post in this thread exibits.

SO enjoy your dayglow rig, YouTube videos of your jumps, flashing your "BASE Jumper" card (or T-shirt) to girls at the local pub, and keep spanking your monkey at the exit point.

As I said before. Who cares? (Not I, just in case you were not clear on that).

hey buddy,

I dont think they are bragging to tell everyone they are cooler than you or me, but just to tell everyone a cool experience they had one night and wanted to share it with us. why are you putting them down? I seem to remember my friends at the ranch going to the perrine with you a while back, where else have you jumped? are you jealous cus youve never packed inside a building you were about to jump? stop making such a big deal about this...oh yea and if you are talking about NY objects they are plenty alive and well, not burned. Ive never seen you jumping them tho...

Hey doode, chill out a little would ya? This wasn't posted as a "look at me i'm so cool" thing at all. Good laughs were had, it was pulled off stealthily, and questions arose as to what the general thoughts of the community were on this. Nothing more.

And no, it won't be on youtube or any of that shit. Come on now, us canucks may be a little slow and a little simple, but we're not douches

That's an interestingly short sighted view.

You're saying that an area (Northern California) with at least 2 specific local ordinances prohbiting fixed object parachuting, with several structures displaying signs reading "No Parachuting" (with a nifty red circle and slash across a parachute), and which is also home to perhaps the most famously burned BASE site in the world, has "no burned objects?"

The point you seem to have missed is that you state you jump to be cool, and in order to be cool you have to share that with someone. That attitude is what is drying up jumps faster than you can blink these days. Vocal jumpers of less than 3 years in this forum, as a trend (note that I don't include ALL) don't realize the damage being done as they have no idea what it was like in years before, nor do they take any interest in the history.

I have no illusions that I am or ever will be cool.

yes, they have been burned in the past. But like a forestfire, the trees grow back again, and as of now that location is fairly mellow, yet still being sessioned.

How far back is the "past?"

Say some time ago, like just after Steve Irwin's Memorial ended up on YouTube?Tongue

Kristian I've heard alot about you, and would love to meet you sometime, but I would say we have a different view on "burnt" and "mellow".

Re: [basemman06] Packing at the exit
Some of the responses to this thread and many others are why I hardly ever post in the BASE Zone. I've jumped with, flown in the tunnel with, or met several people that posted in this thread, so I know they're cool, not that my opinion matters. I also enjoy skydiving, BASE jumping, swooping, freefall photography, formation skydiving, watching related videos, reading stories about them, and lots of other stuff. I've also jumped some of the described burned objects, know others that jump them frequently, and know people who've gotten busted on them. It's probably best that we don't post too many specific details though.

Yes, the A was on youtube. However, it is only shot from the top. How would anyone other than us jumpers know where that was? Yea, im sure a couple people could recognize it, but for the most part id say no. The aussies loved that clip, steve irwins manager was pumped to see it... just like i am pumped to see other jumpers' video footage.

I am sure we will meet this spring in NY, ill be there for a few weeks at some point...
