What about risk-wise, as perhaps you could provide us an informed comparative view of both? Do you think you have more fun with less risk in paragliding? One of the reasons I switched from motocross to skydiving was to reduce risk, and now I'm not sure I have an overall decrease in risk level after throwing BASE into the mix.

that really is a sick movie
i paraglided once in huaraz (peruvian andes) a few months ago, i just did it one day, i got like 3-5 meters off the ground and 50-75 meters horizontal distance, my instuctor told me that i was doing very well for a first timer Smile this movie makes me want to get into paraglidinging even more, it must be awesome to be able to fly in the air for a very long time under a parafoil, flying next to high mountain cliffs, impressing your friends WinkTongueetcetera,
but unfortunately, my financial situation doesn't allow that
anyway, nice vid !!

Paragliding is the bomb. I started skydiving first several years ago and then later started base jumping. When paragliding was proposed to me two years ago I first thought the same thing, "nice but lame".

Well, get out on a nice day in spring or fall in the Dolomites or in Fiesch and go ride some hard thermals and lift up to 13.000 ft, with the glider constantly rocking and twitching because of the alive air. This is not lame. Or go flying acro, feel the speed and the energy conservation of the wing. Seeing acro videos and the incredible things you can do with a paraglider finally made me start paragliding.

A paragliding wing is for me much more interesting than a skydiving wing because it is more efficient and much more powerful. It kind of has its own mind and feels very much alive.

I love skydiving and base jumping, but the pleasures of paragliding are for me just as good if also different.

Thanks to Calvin for posting the link, I had overlooked that video before. Keep up the flying spirit!

Since this is a paragliding thread...

What's the deal with para-motors, power paragliders, whatever they are called.

Do you have to be a paragliding pilot first? Where do you learn how to fly those things?

I've read that it takes between 5 and 20 feet for takeoff...is this true? If so that's sick, I can launch one of those things in front of my house.

Re: [HydroGuy] I might Quit BASE.
I have a few friends who fly them. From I've been told, you can take off in short distances, but sometimes, depending upon the winds, it can take a lot longer. Same with landing. As far as I know, you don't need any type of formal instruction to legally be allowed to fly it. When new people want to fly, the guy I know just orders their gear, then they take it out to the launch site and he teaches them. Best thing to do is to check out a ppg forum. There are a few out there.

(My suggestion is to make very, very good friends with these guys. A free ride to 2000' in a BASE rig during the day is a lot of fun. It's weird, for me at least, seeing the ground at terminal around 500' with the sun out! :-D)

Having never done that, the powered thing is really, really fun . . . . and slow and noisy . . . . but out over the beach or the dz, it's really fun. Give it a shot.

My friend and I teach it. It's awesome to be able to fly in places you otherwise couldn't, pack it in a hockey bag and check it as baggage on a plane to anywhere in the world, and fly as agressively as you want, as close to the ground as you want, for as long as you want. I agree, silent would be way better, but I still haven't figured out that whole warp-drive thing yet.

Calvin, you could definitely launch. Seen it done on one leg before. If you can launch freeflight, you can launch a PPG. We fly from the DZ all the time, you should come out and try it. We had a blast in Moab... flying through the arch was killer.

Acro? Anything that can be done in a paraglider can be done with a motor on your back... you just get to do a whole lot more of it Cool. I can loop my PPG, and would like to learn more.

Re: [mfnren] I might Quit BASE.

yeah buddy!!!! truck yeah its flying season!!!

i dont think a lot of BASE jumpers understand how cool these pilots are, i dont think they understand the ground effect of a wing.
ground effect GREATLY reduces the induced drag of a wing, so the closer you fly to ground, the faster and farther you will go. a wing with a GR of 20/1 in clean air will do 20/1, but on a slope of 40/1, it would glide at 40/1 !!!

its magic people... sometimes im sad i switched from HG to PG... but i still have my SS hang glider!!!

of course, you cant slollom a wingsuit a half meter off the ground, and you cant loop a wingsuit. and you cant stay up in a wingsuit for 6 hours. and you cant land a wingsuit. but you can pretend to be a bird, as close as you can be to a bird, for an amazing 2 minutes.
Shortcut
Re: [airdog07] I might Quit BASE.
wingsuit base is the shizzle..... But so is this..
Shortcut
Re: [airdog07] I might Quit BASE.
speaking of wingsuit BASE....

so, all aircraftr wings have ground effect, it is basicaly the change in angle of lift, reducing induced drag theoreticaly to zero, depending on how close the foil gets to the ground, now, i dont think that a person has ever gotten close enough to the ground to be able to use ground effect or even measure it, but in theory...

a wingsuit -COULD- get a glide ratio of close to 6/1 if it were to be flown a half meter above the hill that was 6/1 slope....

its suicide, but its a accurate theory...

i guess most of the drag on a Wingsuit is paracite drag...

i dont know how many people understand what im talking about... nevermind. ill go to sleep.

Re: [azdiver] I might Quit BASE.
it depends.

PG is more versitle, you have a airplane in your backpack you can fly between states with and stay up all day. and you can land anywhere, and take off anywhere you can hike to

HG you need a modified car to carry it around, it sucks to hike more than 100 yards with.

but its FAST and more effiecient than a PG. but you cant land everywhere. and your not allowd at certain flying sites, because you could kill someone with a big aluminum bat for wings.

im thinking about taking lessons this summer and had some questions about paragliding,

first of all, what kinda ranges are there for paraglide flights, second what are the risk factors, im assuming stalls are biggest? theres a great glider port near my home and i was interested. any other info would be great
Shortcut
Re: [aloneinthesky] paragliding
If i had to pick between skydive/BASE and paragliding. i would take paragliding in a second.

flights on standard PGs ranges-
-forward speed: 14-70km/hr (higher speeds are only on a few acro/comp gliders
-Glide Ratio: normaly, 7-8.5/1. with better comp gliders pushing the 11/1 range
-sink rate: less than 1 meter per second. (BASE gear is around 3 or 4)
-world record distance flown in one flight changes, but it is around 300 miles.
-flights can be all day, my longest is 4.4 hours.

risk?
If you do dont take me as your teacher, its pretty safe. I was being a moron 15 months ago and had a bad crash. spent 3 months in the hospital, and then i re-broke my leg last month because it was still weak, again paragliding. just a hard landing.

but i would say, when done safely, it is about as dangerous as skydiving.

stall? kinda but not really. tucks, and other collapses close to the ground (what happened to meCrazy) are the bad things

only buy a DHV 1 or 1-2 designed in the last 7 years, used as low as 600 USD. but the best are around 1300 USD. harness/reserve about 400 used. a full new set up is around 4000 USD.

lessons are not terribly expensive.

What kites are you flying? Inflatable or open cell? One thing that I love about open cell kites is that you can modify whatever you want to modify and just go try it and feel the results. As long as you don't ride with harness and you don't do jumps with it right after the modification, you might be pretty safe. I wish I was a rigger so I could know more! hahaha... i was not a big kitesurfer.

i only had one Naish AR-5, 11.5 meter used. and i used a wakeboard as my board, i bought that from a freind for 40 dollars.

I currently only have 2 traction kites, both open cell. a 3.6meter and a 5.something. Colorado has shitty wind, so kite snowboarding is what i did. (snowkiting) i havent been under a kite on a board in years though. i was doin it up here when it was super new, and there were only about 5 of us in the state. it was crazy, now there are schools.

I worked at a kite shop for a while, and got SICK deals for kites sadly, they did not sell inflatables, but they did sell some pretty bad ass ramair traction kites. My job was repair. it was awesome.

I was always that kid in school who hated sports, so i made up my own. now me and my 2 best freinds from high school are BASE jumpers. its pretty kick ass.

My love so far has been the Bego600 a 6 m beauty from MacPara. High Aspect ratio! Great lift, sweet jumps and soft landings. I do buggy & snowkiting. I've made some small modifications to change the projected area so I can adapt it to different winds. This is usually a low wind wing so at 20 km/h it's a beast. The upsetting thing about it is that with powerlines it turns so slow. With breaks it turns faster but it loses power. This one is made from Ripstop nylon not treated with silicon. Do you think that if I spray it with food grade silicon it might improve the turning speed? For sure it's gone to change the power/lift but I can compensate that by reducing the projection area (making it more like a U). ... sigh ... I Hope I'm not going to destroy my kite from all the modifications that pops in my head....sigh...

These days some guy named Mike Steen adapted the bullet into a skydiving canopy. Pretty cool. I think the biggest size for the bullet is 12m = 129 sq ft. How low can they go?Tongue

What really is cool about the woopy is that apperently you can't stall it. Everytime you change the angle of atack it comes back to neutral flight even if your body is still in a diff position relative to the wing. Or at least that's what they say on the web-site. I hope it does it without losing a lot of altitude...

http://www.woopy-fly.com/

the woopy is a hang glider, a very small, easy to control hang glider. it WILL stall, trust me. even though i have never flown one, i have flown hang gliders, it WILL stall. any foil can stall if the critical AOA is reached. trust me. this thing might be really really really hard to stall, as in the farthest point the pilot can be pushed back by the control rods is still in front of the CG point (basicaly this means that the control range is not enough to stall it) but it still can be accelerated stalled, and if you can push back far enough, it will stall.

Also, the site reads that the woopy will return to its normal 'trim speed' and will stop turning if not touched. this is true, but its true on almost all hang gliders. again, any glider can spin. and this one may be super-stable, but it still will be able to stall and lose control.

that said, I have seen these types of gliders before, in a full-soaring hang glider design. 'woopy fly' was the first, from 2001. pretty cool shite. these new designs are amazing... these sports are exploding... and i cant wait to find the perfect way to fly...

BASE, is a gateway drug...

all you jumpers out there need to check out PPG, especialy the way Boyd and Robert are teaching it [the link above]. they teach in Co, and it is some of the coolest stuff i have ever seen. emagine being able to swoop for 20 minutes, dragging a toe in the pond for 500', or just climning up, looking around, 'sky putting'.

even though i have not been able to fly [for more than about 1.5 seconds], this is an amazing sport. and electric is on its way....

check the pics i took of the whitehawk crew flying a few weekends ago at the local DZ! and def check them out on the website.

dragging a wingtip and a toe in the water!!!! dont let the look fool you, these things are FAST...

Somebody mention to me in another thread that people are already doing CReW with paragliders but I didn't believe it until I've seen it. Sick, just plain sick.

I really want to do CReW one day. I'm almost finishing my paragliding class and my next big step is to buy a wing. More money to spend & shit.

Some indoor paragliding (does it count for B.A.S.E.?)

Re: [d123] paragliding
hell yeah man, I have only done simple wing walks with paragliders so far, no hard core 'CREW'... but i have proved the concept of jumping my paraglider from 12,000'agl from an airplane. so... all i need is some more PG/skydivers willing to do something new. then we will have 90min CREW jumps.

me trying to lose altitude as fast as possible cant make my PG jump less than about 20 min. and thats pushing it. longest is about an hour from 7000 AGL

here is some pics of me doing a rollover at potato with my paraglider. 2 min flights from 480'

Man !!!!!!!! My longest flight so far has been 10-15 min with DHV1 in half break. No thermal. Just lunch and land. But you are doing some pretty hard core stuff mate.... what are you flying in there? DHV2?

Edit to ask: How do you do D-BAG from a plane? Do you have a slider?

hehehe... i have done it 2 different ways... i wont get into details as to how but one method is a directbag no slider, the other is a deployment bag with slider and PC.

the later takes more time to pack, etc.

and that pictured glider was a DHV 1. a proof of concept jump. sadly i have no pics of later jumps on a 1-2.

Crossover Sports
speaking of crossing over...

I personaly believe that Paragliding and BASE jumping are if not the most pure form of human flight, by far the most versitile.

here are some pics of me flying my BASE canopy at a very popular paragliding hill, was able to have VERY long canopy flights, in fact ones where altitude was gained from a ground launch.

I have been jumping paragliders from airplanes at altitude of up to 18,000' MSL. I have soared for many minutes without loseing altitude on BASE canopies.

I think that these two sports will contiue to progress closer to eachother... and i want to be on that leading edge.
