Re: [aloneinthesky] paragliding
If i had to pick between skydive/BASE and paragliding. i would take paragliding in a second.
flights on standard PGs ranges-
-forward speed: 14-70km/hr (higher speeds are only on a few acro/comp gliders
-Glide Ratio: normaly, 7-8.5/1. with better comp gliders pushing the 11/1 range
-sink rate: less than 1 meter per second. (BASE gear is around 3 or 4)
-world record distance flown in one flight changes, but it is around 300 miles.
-flights can be all day, my longest is 4.4 hours.
risk?
If you do dont take me as your teacher, its pretty safe. I was being a moron 15 months ago and had a bad crash. spent 3 months in the hospital, and then i re-broke my leg last month because it was still weak, again paragliding. just a hard landing.
but i would say, when done safely, it is about as dangerous as skydiving.
stall? kinda but not really. tucks, and other collapses close to the ground (what happened to me

) are the bad things
only buy a DHV 1 or 1-2 designed in the last 7 years, used as low as 600 USD. but the best are around 1300 USD. harness/reserve about 400 used. a full new set up is around 4000 USD.
lessons are not terribly expensive.
