This Month's Parachutist
Anyone besides me notice that the October 2006 Parachutist cover photo is a group of civilian skydivers who've apparently managed to get an Aerial Delivery permit from the NPS to land on Ellis Island (part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument)?

Didn't think about it that way - but I thought it was cool to have the Parachutist in my mail box when I got home after just seeing Her a week and a half ago when sailing out of NYC on the Crown Princess.

I don't know NY well. Is it possible that they were landing on a beach or dock near (but not on) the island? Non NPS.

It is my understanding that all of Ellis Island is NPS property. I suppose a barge or something could have been the landing area, though. I'm trying to find out.

Liberty Island is the NPS Federal park in the Parachutist photo. at least according to GoogleEarthWink

Ellis Island is about 2900' away from Liberty Island. Liberty State Park (the shore) is slightly closer. I don't think the state park falls under NPS jurisdiction.

It would be cool to hear the story where they landed.Smile

Ah, yes. You are correct. My mistake, but I'm still wondering where the LZ was, and if it was on NPS land, what they had to do to get a permit.

I'm assuming it was Jay Stokes. I believe he's a member of their team.

An easy mistake to make since Parachutist attributed it to Ellis Island.Smile

If you get more info let us know. I would love to read the tale. Very cool cover.Smile
