just curious about what the best all around laser range finder might be.

The Bushnell Yardage Pro has been serving BASE jumpers well for a long time.

Choose how much you want to spend, what features, and get the model that you like.

I think lasers are not necessary items for BASE jumpers, but if you buy one, you'll wonder how you got by without it. I know when I got mine I drove around and lasered everything. Now it stays in my car so there's no, "hmmm... I wonder how tall that thing is....?"

One interesting game to play is to try your best to estimate the height of an object before you laser it. Estimate as best you can, and then shoot it with the laser. Eventually, it will make you better at estimating heights and someday if you find yourself without a laser, your estimations will be closer.

cool....thanks. but i don't undrstand? you say you don't need them for base ("I think lasers are not necessary items for BASE jumpers") . yet you use one? i'm confused. but the guessing game still sounds cool.

also.....which one. theres the trophy, the scout, the golf pinseeker. i don't want to buy the one with way too many bells and whistles that i won't really need. but i would pay more for durability. any extra info. would be greatly apprieciated. thank you.

I'd get one as small as I could find, because the only gripe I have about my "Compact" Pro 600 model is that it's so bulky.

Backlight is helpful but not all that necessary.

The Scout is a common choice, as I recall.

As has already been pointed out, unless you're jumping super-low stuff, there's no real advantage to knowing the height of an object to the nearest yard (though it is a lot of fun). And unless you're lasering from the exit point straight down to a flat field, you're probably out by more than that anyway.

I can think of several ways to determine the height of an object to within 20%, which is almost always sufficient for safety purposes. It's a good idea to be familiar with them. That said, the laser reading is a nice piece of information to have, and it's easy.

I use a Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout. It's compact and accurate. Only downside is that it has no backlight. This is usually not a problem, since you can push the button and quickly swing over to a light source in most situations.

A laser Ranger Finder is one of the best tools you can buy for BASE when opening new objects. I have a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 and I just recently used it to open a 246 ft free stander. Basically anything that says “Accurately measures to ±1 yard” will do the trick. Any more that 1 yard and it can make a huge difference when you jump low stuff. From all my research I liked the Bushnell products better along with the Sport over the scout (Sport is cheaper but has a few nice options). Just read up and decide what features you need. But FYI, the backlight is not necessary. If you use it at night. Simply laser the object and then use a light source to see the distance. Antenna light, nearby dim light from street light or something (don't need much), or even your cell phone light to see the measurement.

Scout or Sport 450 will be your best bet. Don’t get a golf pin seeker. I did first to save money and I returned it. Lol.

Looking at the Sport, I notice it doesn't have a scan mode. This is something I've found particularly useful for finding the shortest distance by scanning around a little, or for finding any distance at all on an object like a crane, which can be a bit tricky if you're just pushing the button and hoping you hit.
