Hole in PC
Inspecting my gear after jumping this morning I discovered a very small hole in my ZP PC. It's like it got poked with just the very tip of sharp pencil... just slightly larger than a pin hole, but I can see light through it.

Is this an issue?

Re: [HydroGuy] Hole in PC
I would take it to a rigger so they can see it and handle it. They can test it to see if the hole will easily expand. They will probably just put a small piece of rip-stop tape on it if the hole is big enough.

See ya

Re: [HydroGuy] Hole in PC
Depends . . . is it a poke hole or a ripped hole?

When a sharp object is passed through 0-3 or ZP fabric, like a sewing machine needle, it dosen't tear the fabric it just pushes the weave apart and passes on through. You can usually massage that type of hole back together and forget it.

If it's a real rip, like it was caught on something, and the fibers are actually damaged it may need a real repair. Rip Stop Tape is okay for an emergency field repair, but otherwise with the glue residue and all it makes things worse in the end.

Are you so insecure about your knowledge base?
reality check is due. Why do you not know the answer my young grasshopper? Are you in over your head? "-2" for you in BASE jumping life longetivity. "+1" for asking a question showing your ignorance of the very things that can save your life in this sport.

I always thought of BASE jumpers as being more knowledgable than skydivers, sometimes I think that some jumpers are not by the questions they ask.........

You forgot the +1 for inspecting his gear. That puts him ahead of 75% of the new jumpers I've seen.

He's a new guy. He inspected his gear. He found something he wasn't sure about. He went looking for some opinions/knowledge from more experienced jumpers about whether it was going to be an issue.

Sounds to me like he's doing pretty much what he should be doing.

Come on Space & Mac . . .

These guys didn't skydive for decades before starting BASE like some of us did and most aren't riggers like we were already either.

Discouraging folks from asking questions - yeah - that's the way to be . . . Crazy

Re: [NickDG] Hole in PC
Thanks Nick,
You have a very valid point. My apologies for coming off in a negative manner to you Hydroguy. "-10" for me. Although, Tis better to ask a stupid question and get a stupid answer than to not ask and remain stupid.
But still the fact remains that some people are very gear ignorant. Afraid to do a LRM because they may misroute a brake line for example. This is not an advancement of the sport IMHO.
One's gear is the link between the "Pre Exit" Universe and the "Good Landing" Universe. It behooves one to be as knowledgable about this link as possible. And yes, if one is jumping a one canopy rig one should have the technical expertise of a rigger. One is not jumping without a reserve. One is jumping without a main. What more motivation does one need to learn about one's gear?
Why are they asking these questions? Why do they not know? Have we failed our fledglings? What can we do about it? Basic rigging knowledge should be a prerequisite before the exit. If one has a bad exit many things can happen, if one has a fatal rigging error.......
Please, Instructors and Mentors, teach basic rigging.
Jumpers please learn basic rigging.

Please, everybody.

Confucios say: "To ask a question is a moments shame; to not ask and remain ignorant is a lifelong shame."

Or something like that.
