Do you have BASE number?
Yo!

This is a simple poll to estimate the ratio of total number of jumpers to jumpers with BASE #'s. When there's statistically significant number of responses, the total number of jumpers can be estimated as:

[Total number of BASE jumpers in the world] ~ [highest BASE number to date] * (100/[percentage of jumpers with BASE numbers])

This idea was stimulated by an attempt to estimate the Life/Death ratio.

Thanks! Smile

What happened to the poll? Is it a bug in the forum software?

Anyway, the last time I looked there were about 50 votes and they split 70% yes/30% no. Which puts the ratio of total number of BASE jumpers to those with BASE #'s at 1.4.

So, the total number of BASE jumpers in the world can be estimated as 1070*1.4 = 1500 as of June 2006. (100 of them are dead.)

L/D = 15

It appears to still be functional. What are you seeing?

Not even close. At a guess i'd say less than 10% of jumpers worldwide even look at this site and probably only 1% of those would vote in your poll.

Can you explain how that relates to Yuri's attempt to extrapolate a percentage of BASE number holders v. non number holders?

A reasonable counterargument would be "the people who read this web site are a skewed sample", but not simply "only a very small percentage read this web site." It's not terribly relevant what percentage respond to the poll--only whether or not they are representative of the average on the issue of having or not having a number.

You also need to assume that base jumpers with and without base numbers are equally likely to reply to this forum. Those without may be less likely since they did not report to get a base number in the first place.Smile Thus you may have underestimated.

In addition there are a fair number of base jumpers that have a significant number of jumps but lack one or more objects.
