Hey all--is there anyone who will be there during this time with a laptop with a CD/DVD burner to clear photos off of full CF cards? I'm pretty sure there isn't a internet connection there decent enough to transfer 1GB+ via ftp, right? SO I'm hoping to be able to dump to CD or DVD (but I am laptop-less).

If anyone knows they'll have a laptop there with a CD burner on it, and they'd be willing to let me burn a few CD's, please let me know!

you are right about the internet connection not being fast enough, it was ISDN last year with little prospect of getting broadband.

there is a PC at the BASE Klubb that probably has a CD burner, and you can be sure that there will be laptops around.

I was interested in one of those but read some reviews and everybody was saying that it has a VERY slow transfer rate, takes hours to dump a full 1GB card, and drains the iPod battery and puts unnecessary wear on the heads by making it run for so long.

Still does sound like a cool idea and worth checking I guess if you're not put off by the negative reviews.

What I do when I am away from home, with no computer and only my CF card and iPod, is borrow a laptop from somebody (or use a public PC) and use their HDD as a go-between from my CF card to my iPod. Takes no longer than burning CD's, is easier, and works on any PC with a USB port. Even if you don't have an iPod, if you have a cheap external HDD you don't mind dragging along, you could do this.

I will be there then, but I haven't decided if my laptop is coming with me this year or not yet -
It'll be the last thing I try to pack in, so based on room & weight...
ah... well I'll know tomorrow if you haven't found another alternative then yet.

Last I knew (a couple years ago), both Atle and Douggs had laptops that could do that. I'd bet you'll have no problem finding one.

I will have a laptop with CD burner and CF flash reader. No worry.
You can use it without problem.

I will bring my laptop with me incl. a DVD burner and probably will be in cabin #3. Please bring your own DVD´s and I am more than happy to burn it.
