Re: [wzettler] Incident in Greece on Sunday?
Here's the article in case the link goes dead:

Deadly plunge

A 41-year-old man was found dead on Sunday, authorities said yesterday, after jumping from the side of a mountain in Pella, northern Greece with a parachute. The man was a member of a base-jumping club, which practices the extreme sport of leaping from a fixed object rather than an airplane and then deploying a parachute. A search was launched for the man after he failed to land at the center used by the club in the area of Arnissa. His body was found in a forest at an altitude of 1,550 meters, police said.

Re: [wzettler] Incident in Greece on Sunday?
I asked one of my friends, who is a BASE jumper living in Greece, and he said he had heard nothing about this.

I'll post when/if I get more information.

The club and regular landing area aspects make me think this might not have been a BASE incident after all.

Sounds more like paragliding. Unsure

Without knowing all the facts, I tend to agree with you.

I have travelled a fair bit around that part of the world and most people describe paragliding as "jumping from a cliff". I don't know how many times I have been told of potential "jumping sites" and turned up to find a good launch point for paragliders - or a BASE site that resembles Homer Simpson's attempts at Springfield Gorge!!!!

BTW - depending in the site, pg with a BASE canopy can be fun too. Wink Just make sure you know what you are doing. Really know, not think you know.

Anyway, I hope it is not triple digits. If/when we get there, I think the numbers will start to lose meaning.

My BASE friend there operates a paragliding center, and hadn't heard about a paragliding fatality either.

This wasn't a Base fatality, but a paragliding fatality
at Greek mountain of Kaimaktsalan.

Unfortunately the article is in Greek language:

F..k reports from the Greek crap media, about base
Fatality...

Base jumping in Greece does not exist, and skydiving is in low intensity.

Felix (for Red Bull advertisement) has done two base jumps, years before, and this was the only base jumping activity in Greece as far as I know.
One jump was at Meteora and the other at Corinth canal.
