ApooopA
Made my first ski BASE under calm winds, blue skies and the blessing of the Lord. Met a bunch of cool jumpers, hung out with some great friends and had a really swell time. It was so cool how the Forest service pointed out a better exit point than the one we initially built. Not only was it my first ski BASE, but I got a lesson in animal biology as well, learning about the falcons that live in the cliffs that we were jumping over and that as long as we were not jumping over the no climb zone and 30 feet away from the cliff wall on deployment that we had the Forest Services blessing. They wanted to watch! Although I didnt see any forest service out there the second day, I would like to personally thank them for being so understanding and willing to take the time to help make this event such a huge success. Thanks! And to however alerted the Forest Service to this event, iT. wA.s you, that didnt narc us out but helped us solidify oversla as a great place to ski base. Viva la Apooopa. 60+ jumps made, first ever snowlerbade base jump and no injuries! Thank YOu, Thank You, Thank You Thank Thank You!

Is there a particular reason the letters T, and A were capitilized. Do you have actual evidence, or is this speculation? Glad you had fun, glad you learned something. But to add a little meandering subtle attack, er suggestion of attack, to the end, rather childish. Unimpressed

What's childish is the fact that a base jumper, of all people, narked these guys out to the Forest Service! Unbelievable! You're proof will be when this entire thread gets deleted. Glad the event all worked out for the better though.

Wrong.
There is a falcon closure area that tried to nail us on. That is the issue not forest service land. Didn't need any proof either.

Re: [JackDoffdonner] ApooopA
If this thread gets deleted that is in no way proof that Tom called in the rangers to stop the event. It might be that a concerned wild life watcher is concerned with falcon habitat and didn't want to confront a larger group of guys that huck themselves off of cliffs on skis. Could be a lttle intimidating. Maybe the FS reads these forums when they are having sleepovers at NPS rangers houses and saw that the well advertised (in dates and spec. sites) that they took it upon themselves to check out what the fuck people are doing out there.

You guys need to bring a little more to the table, in terms of proof, in order to seem credible. Tom has his faults, yes he is not perfect. Neither are you, and I know for a fact I really am not. Did Tom call them in on you, I seriously doubt it.

Bottom line: Bring the Proof.

Re: [nicrussell] ApooopA
yea it must have been a concerned birdwatcher...that would explain why the forest service got there before most of the jumpers in the morning, and before anyone even started gearing up to hike. Thats a smart theory. But it doesnt even matter, because it was probably the raddest event ever, the forest rangers were super nice, and the locals enjoyed watching. So, if someone did narc on us, it backfired on them completely, and that makes me completely overjoyed with happiness. I hope whoever did this loses sleep at night thinking about how much of a failure they are.

So...why did you contact the authorities? Or if you didn't, why don't you say something in the lines of "I didn't do it"?

I bet it has something to do with ethics...

Re: [kslay] ApooopA
It was just another theory, like yours, smart or not. I do like my second theory the best. The one in which the apoopa event (which I have zero problem with, and actually wanted to attend) was thoroughly advertised/announced, or whatever. Forrest service wants to know they come out.

I didn't do it.

I'll try to write a longer post in a bit, explaining a bit of the background. Basically, Miles is upset that I met with some folks at CSI about his "Taste of BASE" (where he was going to chuck off all comers for $55 a pop), so he's taken to some relatively childish tactics like tearing bumper stickers off my car when it's parked at the bridge and inventing this little fable.

Re: [tahoejonny] ApooopA
The irony here is stunning.

You guys have been bitching at me for well over a year, and getting upset when I remove the name of this site from the forums. You have repeatedly posted it in ALL CAPS, and have gone so far as to make death threats ("Tom, I'm going to kill you and do weird things to your body") when I continued removing the site name. I tried very hard to warn you guys that posting site names and locations (your crowd also posted driving directions to get there) on the internet is not a good idea.

Now, your repeated postings have gotten you some attention from the land managers (who apparently read about your event from a posting made by the organizers on this forum), so, of course, since it was on this forum it's "all Tom's fault."

Come on guys, step up and take a little responsibility. I was not the one who posted about this event, nor about this site. I tried very hard to keep the site information off the internet. Now you want to point the finger at me for the fact that people read about this on a public forum?

Grow up. Really.

Re: [TomAiello] ApooopA
Oh they read the threads allright, but do you really think the land managers/ forest service are montoring the forums on this site. They got better things to do! Someone specifically told them about the thread, and to check it out or sent them an email with the thread. Not only were they waiting, they were really concerned about us bringing fireworks which was in the thread that got blocked.

BOTTOM LINE, SOMEONE TOLD and as childish as some of our antics are we arent trying to sabatoge our own endevors!

"Tom, I'm going to kill you and do weird things to your body"

was a humorus thread,(however shortlived) made entirely in jest by jimmyh... i thiught that was apparent...

until it divulged into actions of the past, by particular persons, then it immediatley dissapeared...

"a comic book with a dictator over the buttons.." i heard that somewhere..

and.. hypothetically.. if one wanted to "teach someone a lesson" about site naming on the internet, well what better way than to forward that information to the afflicted parties...

not pointing any fingers here, but this is starting to devolve into the same tired good/"ethical" jumper vs. the badboy/"unethical" jumper bullshit that never really goes away around here...

somebody once said... "i guess it boils down to which tom are you? the tomtom's or the nontoms..."

me personally? i dont really give a shit, i just like to jump.

That thread is still on the forum, and can be read by anyone, without logging in. Click here and you can read it. It's also still on the BLiNC forum here, which is also accessible to the public. The counters show that it has been read 426 times on BLiNC and 2487 times on Dropzone.com. That's quite a few people who might have heard about it.

No, no, no! This is exactly the kind of moral relativism that gives sufficient leeway to the childish among us to destroy everything we love about this sport. I'll agree that exit points have a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that make a person forget whatever he disagreed on ten minutes earlier. But that doesn't mean we can't take a stand here, on the forums, among other jumpers, in public.

I hesitate to stand up for Tom, because the second you do you'll be called a Tom-lover and lose respect in the eyes of half the BASE community. But fuck it, this time I'll take my chances because I've seen just about enough bullshit recently that it makes me want to quit BASE jumping. I didn't get in this sport to hang out with a bunch of teenage skydivers.

The argument is really simple. Tom has made great contributions to the sport through online articles, endless conversations with anybody sending him questions, first jump courses, a Twin Falls presence, and forum moderation. Anybody denying this is either self delusional or whoefully ignorant. Nobody says he's perfect, but more people have enjoyed human flight in a safer way because of Tom than because of any other person.

That doesn't go for all the pussy ass whiny little bitches that feed on the trolling and aggravating of other people who are just here to enjoy the excitement of the sport and maybe learn something. You guys know who you are, you guys have not done a single productive thing in your entire life, and you guys behave in a way that vandalizes property, endangers other people, and generally just annoys the well behaving majority of the BASE community. And when you do, you don't apologize. You are proud of the grief you cause, and wallow in your self-righteous coolness. Look at me, I'm such a rebel!

Bah, it's despicable. Go contribute something positive for a change.

In reply to:

It is not when new jumpers stop reading these forums because of its childish nature, and therefore miss out on the enormous amount of information that is hidden among the bullshit. Note, that doesn't imply that forums replace an FJC and mentorship, but it does imply there many people have in fact learned a lot through discussions on this forum.

Secondly, my post didn't just refer to internet trolling. Recent (and past) actions have transcended mere internet trolling, and it has reached a level that we should condemn explicitly.

Case in point, Maggot's recent tagging of other people's property has nothing to do with BASE, and is ultimately just juvenile vandalizing behaviour that no self-respecting productive member of society would approve of. The fact that he does it just to poke a stick in the BASE community's eye only amplifies the childish nature of his behavior.

That's just one example. There are many others out there that take things much further.

Gee this sure is fun kiddies! Temper, temper Jaap!
Now, you all are welcome to stand behind Tom. The majority of people do. That has never made it right though. Perceived well doers are not always good people. Tom is a wealth of knowledge in this sport and he has helped out more people than most. In many ways he is a good person. On the other hand he has taken it upon himself to police the base world and use this site to rally supporters behind him to great success. He has provoked much needless, childish banter and has been the driving force behind many personal attacks and threats of physical violence. Several issues that he has policed have actually never really been an issue until he has decided to make a big stink about it here and gather support. (No I'm not going to give examples. That will just get us all going into another big hissy about old issues)
Some of you accuse us of unprovoked attacks on Tom. Now that is funny! Unprovoked?!! It may seem that way to you but boy are you ever wrong about that.
I will give you this. Posting here and lighting fires in people's asses about issues that don't concern everybody else is childish. I wish that original post that started this thread was not made but I stand behind him anyway.
Concerning that proof that you guys so desperately want. Show me 100%, beyond any shadow of a doubt proof that someone like Miles D is damaging to our sport and I'll show you 100% proof that Tom A. narked on the APOOOPA event.
Before you start laying in to people because of what you hear about them on this forum think twice. Meet them in person first. As we all say every time these types of issues pop up, actions speak louder than words. And in the case of the APOOOPA event it was an action which spoke to the forest service.

personally, I read the attacks on Tom and don't understand them. they seem full of allegations and conclusions but lack any evidence.

I read Tom's posts, and he generally backs up his thoughts with facts.

until you provide supporting facts, I'll find it difficult to agree with your opinions.

potential exit point conversation:
"hey, go ahead and jump, it's safe!"
"in this wind? how do you know that?"
"what? you don't believe me? JUMP!"
"uh, you sure about that? this looks shakey..."
"it is safe! must I spell it out for you?"
"YES! I don't understand. educate me!"

hmmmm. proof that Miles D is damaging to the sport? can't be done. by the time we would all agree that someone's actions are damaging, the situation would be out of control.

it's like on a jump when things look perfect, but don't feel right. many jumpers will climb down, feeling it was the right decision. proof? well, they can still jump again.

how do you prove Russian Roullette is dangerous? heck, squeeze that trigger. if nothing happens, wow, this is cool and safe?
