Be that as it may, I don't know many people who never took any fliers

I actually know a lot of people who've taken the risks, paid the price, and try to counsel other people to avoid it. In the context of the movie, the old guy might have done a stretch of hard time, and wants to help the young guy avoid it (note that I've not actually seen this film). In the context of BASE, the old guy may have seen a bit of carnage, and wants to help the young guy avoid being part of the next round.

. . . . I have no reservations with approaching BASE very conservatively. I don't ever plan to go "hard" in BASE, and for that matter I don't ever want to be known as that person. But in my mind I think I will be the most worried after I have 50 jumps under my belt and am thinking I can handle things that I can't. That's where I hope my much more experienced BASE friends can help coach me through my decision making process. And believe me, I listen very carefully and heed everything you guys tell me.
