Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
http://www.cnn.com/...sejump.ap/index.html

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- An Austrian stuntman who claims world records for BASE jumping parachuted off the top of Latin America's tallest building Monday before escaping in an SUV to avoid police capture.

Felix Baumgartner, 36, launched himself off the 225-meter (738-foot) Torre Mayor on Mexico City's main Reforma Avenue, starting with a free fall and then floating downward under an opened parachute as about 200 curious onlookers gathered below.

Baumgartner spoke briefly with the news media before jumping into a Hummer driven by friends and speeding away. The extreme-sports enthusiast apparently had not obtained a permit for his jump, and local authorities tried unsuccessfully to detain him on charges of putting the public and himself in danger.

On his Web site, Baumgartner claims to have jumped off the world's highest building in 1999, the 1,479-foot (450-meter) Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and to have made the lowest BASE jump, from the 29-meter (95-foot) Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also in 1999.

BASE is an acronym for Building, Antenna, Span, Earth, the fixed objects from which parachutists make their BASE jumps.

I do believe Taipei 101 is a tad taller than the petronas and I also believe there have been a few people who have jumped lower 95 ft.
Hopefully one day he will review his claims, take that stick out of his ass, and learn to not be so scared of the dark. I guess he wouldn't be world famous then.

You are absolutely correct.

If Felix is comfortable claiming records that someone else should rightfully own, good luck to him!!! Tongue

It seems that he does a wonderful job promoting his product. Hats off to him for that.
He bags a lot of high profile sites. Good on him.

If he is happy lying to himself and the world about his records, he has his own conscience to deal with.

I would have a lot more respect for him if he competed against other high profile jumpers. He would not have to win, just perform very well against them.

If that is not his goal (obviously not), then that is fine too.

Go Red Bull......Tongue

Could someone explain to me why what Felix did is worse than what, say, Jeb did when he got busted on the Eiffel tower jump?

Or why, Jeb & Iiro garnering media recognition in that new TV show is laudable, whereas Miles or Shane’s media attention is, in general, not?
Shortcut
Re: [AirCanada] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
Jeb got busted, but didn't call every press agency in the world to let them tell that he had done the jump or was going to do the jump.
He did it more for the jump itself, to fullfill his dream (watch ground is the limit, he tells all about that jump in there) and not to gain media-attention, I think

Also, I think that the jumps done in 'The Courier' were all done with permission. I don't think security would be able to laugh if you would come up with a couple of armed men to film and fly a heli around the building...

Re: [outrager] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
Hey

I am a local here at México city , personally I was busted trying to jump this B , I was already on the Helipad when they got me (Bastardos) anyway the security was very tight so getting inside was impossible except with a permit which they got probably because of his sponsor.
Anyway I watched the jump from below( a little sad for not being a part of it) but at least I saw it, he landed right on the spot. And let me tell you this was a technical landing with only a small area to land.

The jump didn't go so well for Felix , the free fall and opening part, I think he overrotated his gainer and had to open in an unstable position, but you can see the pictures as they speak for themselves.

In general I was not happy that he burned it but on the other hand I am glad he landed OK and that his jump was a success maybe it will help us open new sites with permits. We have to make the best of it.

One last thing , we should not believe what we hear from newspapers , I was right there on the landing area and this was not a bandit jump he had all the permits even from the police , they were even helping with the traffic. They just made that to make it cooler, I even saw Felix in a picture next to an officer who was keeping the people from getting inside of the landing perimeter.

PS I have nothing against Felix the description of the jump is just what I saw, and here are the pics

Re: [outrager] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
I can give you my take on Felix's antics and why it bugs me.

I live in the UK, a considerable distance from Mexico City. Today I received a text from a non jumper friend saying he just saw this jump by an austrian on TV.

Yeah, on TV in the UK. That's news. Worldwide news.

It's news because Felix in his wisdom has decided that what he does has to be told to the masses, so he and his sponsors call all the news agencies and invite them along to watch and report and film.

Why does that bug me personally?

Because what he seems to not realise, is that hundreds of BASE jumpers the world over, hidden from the public glare are secretly planning their own building jumps. Jumps which they have had to put a lot of effort into to get to the exit point. These jumpers, haven't the luxury of a coporate sponsor who can organise their jumps, and pull strings to get access. They have got there through sheer determination, sheer luck and in the majority of cases, sheer oversight on the part of building security.

Now however, in every hotel lobby in the world, in every apartment block, in every office building, security personel are watching felix's 'bandit' jump on the national news and are thinking 'man, i bet someone get's their arse kicked for letting that happen.....oh wait a minute, could that happen here.'

Now the majority of security personel won't actually get off their fat behinds and go check the door to the roof, or the stairwell access, so no harm done there. But I will bet you that worldwide some will. And somewhere a jumper might have lost their access and they don't even know it yet.

At the very least, basejumpers are now at the forefront of the minds of most news watching security personel the world over, which means we all have a higher chance of both getting busted or losing our access.

In a nutshell, building jumps (especially occupied buildings) are hard enough to bag as it is, without felix broadcasting to the world that we're out there and doing our thing.

It wouldn't even have been so bad if it was a legal jump and reported as such. That way everyone in a position of security would be happy that the status quo has been maintained.

I really feel for the local jumpers in Mexico City at the moment. Their Buildings will be under a lot of scrutiny, but because of the global news networks, felix's antics create ripples way beyond the 'local' level that usually gets created when a jumper is spotted or busted. That's what bugs me.

Re: [sabre210] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
That's a very good point.

I recently jumped a TV tower in the middle of nowhere and the tower technician/engineer showed up mid-day on a Sunday and busted us inside the perimeter. He called the police and left (the cops probably told him to leave and let them handle it). Well we decided to get down and out.

This guy was blocking the road with his truck and said he knew we were BASE jumpers and started going into a rant about how dangerous it was, and how people get hung up on the guy wires, and he knows we've been jumping it, blah, blah, blah... When he asked for our info (so he could charge us) I drove around his truck and left. Somehow we missed the police and got away unscathed.

This was shortly after the Agnos mishap and I can't help but wonder if the media coverage of that incident had this guy checking the A at different times as a heightened security measure.
Shortcut
Re: [sabre210] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
he has been here and done his thing from the big scottish road bridge and not long after cameras were fitted and laws passed to enable arrest for jumping from ANY of the big bridges here...he does well for his sponsors but does the sport no favours with the whole bandit style of his broadcasts he makes every man jack look like we areout to bust the rules and give the man a poke in the eye ...the trouble is that's how Red Bull want to be seen and legal permitted jumps wouldnt be good brand positioning...they are an extreme sports company so they want and get extreme.

he is ostracised by his fellow countrymen for being an arse...i know ive spoken to former team mates of his...even fellow red bull sponsored athletes of his think he is a prick...i for one have never met him so as a person i cant judge him but as a BASE jumper i think the guy needs to read sabre 210s post and try and sort his act out...

Shortcut
Re: [tfelber] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
I should add though

1. I don't really care about the whole Red Bull sponsorship thing etc.....good luck to the guy and live and let live. It would just be nice for him to realise that his publicity isn't always useful to other jumpers.

2. If this was a fully legal B jump with permits but the media chose to portray it as a bandit jump DESPITE felix and his team's efforts at promoting it as legal, then I apologise for the majority of the above. If however it was legal but they chose to portray it as a bandit jump to add kudos, then that stinks.

3. (covering his back) Some urban jumps you run a high risk of getting busted. It could happen to anyone (really covering his back), I just think on those jumps, inviting the world media along is necessarily the best idea.

Hello

As I said before , he stopped to chat with the press, the whole time the police was helping with the traffic and from keeping people out of the perimeter where he landed.

I also have a picture of him (attached) where on the right side of the picture behind the camera guys there is a policeman watching the whole thing, andd from the look on Felix face he doesn't look like he is fleeing the police , does he?

Anyway I am not attacking him I am just saying that the news here say it was a bandit jump and me and my friends were feet away from the police which were trying to help make the jump safe for Felix and from all the spectators.

You are taking this quite well, but doesn't it just bite your ass knowing that your own government and the building owners have overlooked you and or your fellow Mexican BASE jumpers and had brought in a foreigner to make the jump? I'm sure they are aware of you since you got busted on the heli deck preparing to jump...(why didn't you just bail on them?)
If you knew that Felix and Red Bull were planning on making the jump how come your sponsor didn't chime in and help you out? I would think that a Mexican Go Fast jumper would have priority over a Austrian Red Bull'er. I would think that the public would have enjoyed that more as well... getting to see a local make it big. Just wondering.

When it comes to bats, size matters

"It turns out size does matter," said Syracuse University biologist Scott Pitnick.

For some male bats, sexual prowess comes with a price -- smaller brains.

A research team led by Syracuse University biologist Scott Pitnick found that in bat species where the females are promiscuous, the males boasting the largest testicles also had the smallest brains. Conversely, where the females were faithful, the males had smaller testes and larger brains.

"It turns out size does matter," said Pitnick, whose findings were published in December in "Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Science," an online journal.

The study offers evidence that males -- at least in some species -- make an evolutionary trade-off between intelligence and sexual prowess, said David Hoskens, a biologist at the Center for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter in England and a leading authority on bats' mating behavior.

"Bats invest an enormous amount in testis, and the investment has to come from somewhere. There are no free lunches," said Hoskens, who did not participate in the study.

The relationship between the breeding system and relative brain size has received little investigation, said Pitnick, who teaches evolution and population biology and researches topics such as sexual selection and sexual conflict.

Bats are the second largest group of mammals (behind rodents) with about 1,000 known species. Because of their exceptional navigational and flying abilities, bats have been the subject of countless studies, providing Pitnick and his colleagues -- Kate Jones of Columbia University and Gerald Wilkinson of the University of Maryland -- with a bounty of data without having to slink off into caves.

Pitnick's team looked at 334 species of bats and found a convincing contrast in testes size. In species with monogamous females, males had testes starting at 0.11 percent of their body weight and ranging up to 1.4 percent.

But in species where the females had a large number of mates, Pitnick found testes ranged from 0.6 percent to 8.5 percent of the males' mass (in the Rafinesque's big-eared bat).

"If female bats mate with more than one male, a sperm competition begins," Pitnick said. "The male who ejaculates the greatest number of sperm wins the game, and hence many bats have evolved outrageously big testes."

Promiscuity is known to make a difference in testicle size in some other mammals. For example, chimpanzees are promiscuous and have testicles that are many times larger than those of gorillas, in which a single dominant male has exclusive access to a harem of females.

Large brains, meanwhile, are metabolically costly to develop and maintain.

Pitnick's research suggested that in those bat species with promiscuous females, the male's body used more of its energy to enhance the testes -- giving it the greater adaptive advantage -- and lacked the energy it needed to further develop the brain.

The study found that in more monogamous species, the average male brain size was about 2.6 percent of body weight, while in promiscuous species, the average size dipped to 1.9 percent.

Re: [AirCanada] Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
Personally - I've got no major problem with the attention.

Following are some thoughts and not necessarily my opinion.

Why do certain jumpers have better reputations than others, and why are some liked whilst others are disliked? To me it is a combination of the character of the individuals being judged, and the morals/values/ethics of the people making the judgements. Perception is mixed in the process as well.

For example, why does Felix have a poor reputation in the BASE scene?

There could be a host of reasons. Some may include:
- the motivation for the average person to get into BASE jumping may revolve around being anonymous, unregulated, independant, private, free, etc. They may feel that the sport is being pushed into a controlled situation by the attention that it is getting.
- in society, there are extreme introverts, extroverts, and everything in between. Introverts can feel threatened by the behaviour of extroverts.
- many people have had their local objects "burned" due to inconsiderate/selfish behaviour of jumpers who are chasing attention. The cost may be increased security and penalties. They may feel that their rights have been violated.
- some people may be just plain jealous as they have not received the same attention/sponsorship/publicity.
- some people are disappointed that jumpers who are genuinely talented do not receive the focus and rewards that their lessor skilled colleagues are receiving.
- BASE ethics exist. Each of us have a different view or perception on what these ethics should be. Being humans, we sometimes tend to be more critical of others and have higher expectations of them. You know, do as I say, not as I do.
- there are some individuals who isolate themselves from their colleagues. This does create tensions. For instance, Jeb & Iiro may be liked because they actually spend time with other jumpers. They learned their craft from others and openly communicted with them. Whereas Felix does not - he seems to maintain contact with ony a few jumpers. If you look at Miles and Shane - Miles is loud/brash, people are threated by his extroversion. He is controversial to some extent (even if a lot of this controversy is not warranted and is created by other jumpers), Shane has the McKonkey named after him. I think Miles is gaining a bit of respect afte his Most Jumps World Record and the fact that he involved a charity.

There are a million other possibilities.

Basically, if a jumper is sociable, has some degree of skill (which he/she does not overestimate), has achieved some degree of success, is not overly egotistical, has some level of respect for the BASE ethics, does not expose him/herself to excessive risk, respects the sport, etc - then that person is likely to be liked and respected by the majority of the jumping community.

If a person is the opposite to the above, they are more than likely to be disliked.

That is human nature.

The press are not morons. They were there and saw the coppers. They chose to make it a bandit story as well. Other news channels who were not there chose not to do any research.

Hey Jason

Well people ask me if I had burned this building already since I was caught at the helipad before Felix jump . The answer is "NO" the reason is that when I was caught I wasn't equipped yet, I had my rig in the Stashbag and was getting ready but the local authorities never checked my bag, je je and they didn´t press charges for tresspasiing or anything I was just warned and they let me go.
My story was that I was filming for a short movie and I wanted to film from México's highest point and since I have a camera they bought it! HA

It pissed me a little not being part of the jump and I heard that they paid a lot of money to get the B permits and to bribe the police. But the point that pissed me more was that nobody in México knew about Basejumping so it was very easy for me and my friends to do it stealthy, but now more local authorities know and some are pissed saying Felix could have hurt bystanders. So now if we get caught we might be in a little more trouble than before, hopefully not.

Cheers

Not at all, if thats what you read through my post.........but Granny does sum it up best.
For someone to breach the "unwritten rules" in such a public way......they should at least be doing it right ( whatever right may be other than being able to land without injury)
How many non jumping people do you think watched the event or video and thought that although BASE itself is a 'crazy' thing to do.....you must be all 'crazy loons with no control over what you are doing' if this is how the best in the world jump off a building.

Wouldnt you rather the world saw a public BASE jump that made non jumping people think....."wow that guy was totally in control of everything he was doing from exit to landing........these guys have some serious skills.......perhaps we should let them jump off buildings during the day more often, I mean they know exactly what they are doing "

Re: Felix Baumgartner chats with press before fleeing police
here in germany, we see it a little more complex.
we from the german base association want to open objects by asking the owners and take small steps forward. we had our official bridgeday weekend and some more events with hard work to get it done and permitted.
jumps and media releases like this jump throws us miles back.
in my point of view, there is no doubt about the circumstances.
legal or not is not a question, sorry.
I am convinced, it worked the "usual" way.
like the petronas story, the baffin story that appeard in the german newspapers or "the lowest base", and so on.
but of course, he is not able to sell a story with the title:
"see me jumping from a building with permission and support from the local police."
this will not bring any headlines or minutes of broadcasting.
it is less expensive for his sponsor to pay for the permissions and the support, keep that halfway secret and sell the pictures to the media as a daredevil-stunt-escape-show.
no newspaper will print the truth afterwards and the game for the sponsor is won.
worldwide presence on the screens...
this is, for the sponsor, a very good thing.
for us jumpers here, it is a nightmare.
we are trying hard to convince owners of buildings and other objects, that we know what we are doing.
and that we play that game in a safe way.
with a mediarelease on the tv and even well known newspapers, this can damage our work of years in a minute.
we do not find that funny. if someone does a jump and gets busted, ok. can happen to everyone.
if asked by the media afterwards, ok - do your best.
but informing the media and police in front, ignoring the ethics and not giving a shit about consequences for the community and selling this as a one-man-superhero-story pisses me on.
the explanation, he has to make a living from that does not work for me.
everyone has to sort his way out.
as long as red bull pays all the fines and travelling expenses it is good for him but not for us.
we all have to suffer from that more or less.
If I would decide to shit in someones backyard would be able to sell that to the media - good for me.
how about the owner of a backyard? do you think he sees that as a funny joke?
The point is, I do understand the politics of red bull.

I'd say NO. Nor do they need to in their minds. Their goal is to attract people to the extreme not keep or service those that are already there. As Hajo said it is for what makes the news.

Did the jumps into the Superbowl get this much media attention? A lot more people actually witnessed those jumps. Now if those jumps were orchestrated as bandit jumps, think of the media coverage...

It seems the people getting paid to make the jumps really don't care. They got to jump and got paid to do it. Maybe all the publicity isn't bad for BASE. Maybe the more people see it the more it becomes accepted. Publicity has helped many extreme sports in the recent past.

I realize there are people into BASE because they are drawn to the secrecy and stealth aspects, but others are drawn to the publicity. I enjoy both aspects. I get really jazzed sneaking a jump. I also enjoy taking my wife and son and friends and ... out to watch.

There are several times I drive by something jumpable and I just want to go up to the people in charge of access and say "Do you mind if I jump off your object?" It would be nice if that would work occasionally.
