jumpable antenna ?
Hi all !

since you guys seem to know loads about every A on earth, i thought i'd post to ask for a bit of advice...

there's this 110meters antenna (360feet) in the neighbourhood...

thing is, the shape is more like the eiffel tower than a lollypop.

what do you think about the width of it compared to it's height ? does the mention of '2sec handheld delay' make you hair stand up ?

photo's posted so you get the idea....
thanks, and all the best to all !!!

That massive stinger on top, and the other dish array on the adjacent structure is what makes my hair stand up.

The Antenna itself looks pretty doable.

Do you know what it's transmitting?
Shortcut
Re: [DexterBase] jumpable antenna ?
yeah, it's a TV and Radio transmitter.
i read the different posts about US antennas with interest, but dont know the technical terms, and how to translate them in our european norms.

here are 2 wider views, just to appreciate why my interest Wink

A plut

'Contacte des gars qui bossent dans le domaine... ' ... t'as un mail pour ça ?

i read that tv & radio emitters werent so dangerous... am i completely mistaken ?

(photos posted because identifcation is most impossible, except for Fish who knows the area by heart Wink )

Re: [sonicboy] jumpable antenna ?
ask Swisscom what they think about it, or people like Ueli. Andreas should also have an idea, he has electrical knowledge and can be helpful...

Re: [piisfish] jumpable antenna ?
yeah, ok. I'll post a mail to the operator, sort of 'hi, i'm david, do you think jumping your antenna can be dangerous?' Wink

yeah. will contact andreas, good idea.

thanks fish. go back to work now Tongue

Re: [DexterBase] jumpable antenna ?
It's UHF for television and FM for radio.

Don't know if that helps explaining the risks...

Photos like that are OK. My "no identifying photos" rule was aimed primarily at 2 particular photos that kept getting reposted, both of which included signs indicating name, or both name and location, of popular objects.

Re: [TomAiello] jumpable antenna ?
so Tom, what do you think of UHF and FM ??
Shortcut
Re: [TomAiello] jumpable antenna ?
hi tom, thanks for the precision - i wanted to clear that before getting told off Tongue

so, if i understand correctly dexter's post, the question is much more 'what emissions does the antenna send' than 'what do you think of the shape of the thing' ?

Yes. The shape of the tower looks very jumpable to me.

In general, I think they are fine. Much depends on the actual strength of broadcast and your proximity to the transmitter.

I've looked over the safety regulations for several UHF and FM transmitters in the US. I've never found one that required workers to stay further than 200 feet away when the transmitter was at full power (and it was a very powerful tower). And that's for workers who need to spend a significant amount of time at that range performing some task or other. In all honesty, the number of towers I've found that I was actually concerned about radiation exposure on is very limited.

Short answer: climb fast, turn around, and get off, then don't worry about it unless you're doing it 4 times a week.

Re: [TomAiello] jumpable antenna ?
I've got a local 320' antenna that is similar. It's an outside climb (bolts) AM tower, which makes getting on it quite interesting. So yes, your tower looks jumpable.

ok, cool, thanks for the answers !

if ever someone's a great engineer out there, here's the 'diagram of emissions' i found on the net..... do you understand what it's about ?!

while this is not my area, it appears to depict the radiation strength as viewed from above the antenna.

jump eastward to get the most radiation.
jump northwest to get the least.

'course you ought to consider landing areas, prevailing winds, obstacles, etc.

if a "great engineer" out there disagrees, please correct me!

apart from what the A is producing (which is certainly another issue -----> http://www.basejumper.org/...bum_cat.php?cat_id=6 if you were initially worried about jumping such an object due to its shape, then maybe this post will help you:

Hey David, is this the total height?
Would you be planning on climbing the top part?

from another webpage, structure is 120m

Re: [JFK] jumpable antenna ?
hi! as Fish says, reports say 120m. (400feet)...

i doubt there's no ladder on the side, even of the top part, there usually always is. but anyway, there's no real plan yet, just thoughts!

There is usually access inside the transmitter..
Might want to go to the sperm bank and save some of your potential kids before jumping these objects... ;)

Re: [sonicboy] jumpable antenna ?
there has to be access inside the cylinder. might be a tight fit tho.

well, i'll go and check that out from nearer some of these days... but i'm sure there's a good old ladder out there, there has to be : switzerland is so nice and clean Tongue

Re: [sonicboy] jumpable antenna ?
I often jump an antenna that looks like almost the exact thing as yours. Its in Sweden and its about 110 m. This antenna does not have stuff sticking out from it thuogh.
Its no cables and the base of the antenna is about 12x12 meters. It feels good to jump it with some tailwind.
good luck

Re: [andreasw] jumpable antenna ?
dont talk. go there and just jump it. NOW!! its high !!

then come here and tell us, send the pics. pleeaasse !!!
