Re: [clint] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
Just about any of the sites at Mineral Bottom are a favorite. No climbing, very little hiking, beautiful view (although any exit point in Moab has a nice view from the top).

So far, Mari's gash...
Opportunity to be lazy, no hiking.
Just high enough to possibly do something silly, a flippy, or a wee stowed delay.
Great view.

I'm sure you guys have cooler ones, I'm just not familiar with many of them Smile

yeah, no kidding

C-tower is the BOMB!!!

especially if you climbed to get up it... Tongue

I'd love to do pile-of-dirt, but I'll need to get better jugging skills first.

thanks again to Jimmy, Marta, Wayne, Tom D, Gabe, Dude, Lee and everyone else who made my first Turkey Boogie a great one!

Re: [clint] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
I've only got a handful of Moab exit points under my belt (nothing too exotic like the C-Tower spire some people are talking about here) but I like each and every one I've jumped from. I'll always like Tombstone for it's easy access (and I've jump this one by far the most as I'm sure everyone else has), plus I've done Toom'ie solo a couple of times now as I passed through town. What can you say about Mary's Gash except that it's in Magical Mineral Bottom. Echo is super fun (if you don't mind the climb) and Igana Dome (sp?) is pretty darn cool as well.

Re: [clint] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
The jumps I went on with you, Clint, during TB were all high value jumps. WS-looking over the river and landing on the pavement next to a wall, JL - A quick go&throw and then a minute and a half canopy ride trying to make it all the way back to my truck, and SS - Nice, high, overhung and a decent canopy ride. I really liked Toomie, especially being last one off in the dark, and ML is cool and easy, but I think my favorite so far would be WSSmile...although I would really like to know where that road on top comes from...maybe next trip out I'll bring the jeep and we can go exploring.

Indian Cave
No traffic, no spectators, fun technical climbing section, relatively short turnaround time, our dog Lua waits for us by the windsock(so she gets to enjoy the day also), severely overhung, sandy landing area, nice view, kinda low(280 to the landing area) so you get that groundrush as you exit.
What more could you ask for?
That is a rhetorical question.

Re: [clint] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
All the jumps in Moab are unique. I just have to say that my favorite is all of the ones I have been able to walk away from without injury.

And that wasn't the case for two of them!

I got lots of respect (translation, "FEAR") for Moab Jumping. There isn't any other place quite like it though, there are surely similar areas, many undiscovered.

Oh, the Turkey Gathering is definately a special time and if you have never been, you shoud find a way.

Re: [RayLosli] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
Those two jumps (C-tower and mudd pile) are now in my top three "coolest jumps ever" category. It's going to take an ultra cool jump to pass those ones up!

Looking around from the summit of those towers, I had to ask the question, "are we truly the lucky ones, or what?"

(BTW, thanks for helping us out lastnight Ray! I tell you what, anybody that will drag their ass out of the house when you show up on his doorstep at 11 PM and ask for directions to an antenna... He wasn't packed, but he drove with us over an hour to the site, helped us "access" the inside of the perimeter, and stood there watching the ground freeze (literally) while Katie and I climbed 900 feet to make a jump with temperatures in the 20's. There was a car a short walk away with a heater, stuff to eat and drink, and tunes... but he stayed there shivering his ass off until we were safely on the ground. Anybody that will do that for you, that is a friend. Thanks again Ray.)

Re: [clint] Moab, Your Favorite Jump?
Back when I used to jumpUnsure my favorite was alway Control Tower. The jump itself is fun and and the hike is cake. Since you're kind of out on a point the heading options are a little better to, but the fact that you hike in from one place, jump into a valley then hike out and end up in a different location always appealed to me. It was like a mini journey or exploration. We jumped it a few years ago during T-day and there was snow down in the valley even though all of it had melted away up on top. Of course the exit point is littered with little triping hazards and if you F-up you're kida stranded back in that valley, but I always looked forward to hitting Control Tower during Moab trips.

A sweet freefall from "Welshmens Walk" holds number one in Moab for me. Easy or no hike to exit. Killer ground rush. And a easy hike out. Plus, it's close to town so you can get to the "Brewery" faster.Wink

Give some serious thought to doing the tower jumps next time you have a chance.

Off the King Fisher my canopy flight was a minute and eight seconds.

Off C-tower, it was two minutes exactly.

You'll be extremely hard pressed to find a canopy flight cooler than King Fisher.

Okay, that's pretty cool, but at the King, you can exit, then thread your canopy flight between massive desert spires and fly in close proximity to some of the most radical rock features I've ever seen. Some of the towers have some really unlikely looking formations. Just a badass experience.

You don't start on the glacier. You jump into a crevasse that has ice flows on the sides, then you turn left, fly between the ice flows and out of the crevasse, and onto the glacier. Then you turn right and slide down the glacier. If you were completely insane (DW wouldn't consider it--that's how insane it is) you could turn right after exit and thread between two rock spires and under a manmade bridge.

Mine has a tram to the exit, and a cool little cafe at the top making these unearthly good donuts. I'm not sure if that's a positive or a negative.

I do think that as Americans we are sometimes guilty of thinking the US has the best of everything. But as BASE jumpers we are usually less guilty than other Americans.

I have a question about the rocks in these two pictures.
In the big pile o dirt picture, is that somone standing at the pinnicle of the lower of the two fingers of rock or is it just a trick of the camera.
I bet the view is fucking awsome from up there :)

And obviously you have to climb to the top, so what do you do with all the climbing gear you use to get there?
Do you jump with it or do you have someone to abseil back down with it after you jump?
Or do you just freeclimb to the top?

If you freeclimb it with a rig on your back, im not sure what commands more respect from me.
The fact you jumped it or the fact you freeclimbed it...

It will be a COLD day In HELL, when you catch me FreeClimbing that HUGE Dust-Pile.
I did not pull lead on setting those Ropes. I only Tagged Along. By Jugging up behind with my gear and once with some extra rope for a pitch.
The real Bad Asses that deserve Credit for me being able to go to the Top is Lee & Chad P.
On one day we left all Jumping Gear Tied and secure on the 3rd pitch. It made the climb to the Top a breeze to haul-ass up to the top and jump the Next Day.
.
I did see some interesting & skilled Climbing while we were on the way to the top the 1st day.
I did see a Climber do the beginning bolt-ladder and free climb the chimney to the 2nd pitch we were at a couple times.
I could not help be notice he was having a little difficulty towards the top of the dusty and crumbling Chimney. When I saw him use His -FACE- as well as Hands and Feet to make a Hold and not Fall Off.....Shocked
.
After watching all the fun He was having. I decided. That's Not for me my friend.

cbrnick:
..."And obviously you have to climb to the top, so what do you do with all the climbing gear you use to get there?"

It's not as hard as it Sounds. You just wear your Jacket and Climbing Harness. Then put all you hardware inside an oversize Fanny-Pack and strap that on. Then pit your Rig on over that. then Jump.
I Hauled all the gear Like Rigs, Protective Hard Gear,. Water etc. On a simple Personal Pull set-up behind me. With a Tib-loc & Beener and some 6mm line. Fixed to the 11mm that I Jugged up on the first half of the climb.
If a fat, old & lazy basterd like myself could do it. You will have NO problems.

The View and the Jump was Worth the Wait and the work to get there. Also the Signing of the Log-Book on the top is pretty cool too. There are NOT that many #'s of BASE Jumpers in that book ahead of US. I felt pretty Lucky that day.

Potash!! It's got it all. If you hike the road you can usually catch a ride with one of the 4 wheel drive vehicles doing the class 4 trail. So not only do you ride to the top, it's fun as hell!! Then It's a short walk down hill to the exit point. The view is excellent, the cliff is tall and the landing area is beautiful. Then when it's all over you get in your car and go to the Moab diner for breakfast!
Don't know why I like being at the top of that cliff so much, it just feels right.

I've done some pretty cool jumps in Moab. Some tallish ones with tiny LZs and long hikes out are always fun when you think of the consequence of failure.

But for easy access and memories it's gotta be sweet spot. Kinda tall, big LZ, flips and shit with Walt getting great footage and last second 2-way decision with the late Luke Chappel opening with just over a 90 left and almost walking over his canopy. It's a good final memory :)

There's this awesome place you can sleep at the base of the tower so you can pack in just a sleeping bag, wake up, watch the sunrise, climb a 400' beautiful chimney climb with a 270deg view of beautiful scenery, and then skip the 1.5 hour hike with a long ass canopy ride right to the car and beer.

The yellow brick road up in the la sals in what we call the gorgeous gorge area, this jump is sentimental one, so few of us have jumped these exits and of those 3 are no longer with us in less than a year, this jump was full on when Daniel scoped it as we jumped it each time we landed we would spend an hour pushing prying and heaving boulders out of the way hoping to make it friendlier for other people to be willing to enjoy the amazing canopy flight. Fly Free Daniel, Beau, And Kevin.
