I have been looking at a big building by me. Of course when I go to the stair well, signs are posted saying there is no access to the roof. However I got to the top floor and the door was opened. I didn't see anything stopping me from just taking a peek to see what was where. I didn't see any cameras. Not even that little security magnet attached to the door to tell you when it is ajar. Now I'm not sure if I should tell you what kind of building this is or not, residential, business, etc. However it may help if I did.

I figured as long as there was no rig on my back and I wasn't picking any locks I would be safe from trouble. But my friend was cautioning me not to open the door and look around. My perspective is, if it was easy to get there an no locked doors or horrible signs of persecution stood in my way then I could just play dumb if security got in my way. Again there was no sign saying not to enter, only one on the first and fifth floor telling me there was no roof access via the stairs.

Was I proceeding like a jerk? Do you think I would have gotten in trouble? Broad daylight just in a building going up the stairs to the upper most floor (and then to the roof). Simple and legal right?

Any help would be great. Thanks everyone.

Take a camera with you, preferably an SLR. If you get caught then tell them photography is your hobby, you just wanted to take some nice pictures from the roof. Take a video camera too and film as much of the access and exit point as you can.

Yeah there are no other base jumpers around here. Upstate there are and I'm good friends with some of them. I think I'd be the first off many if not all of the objects I have my eye on out here.

Technically, the signs posted makes it trespassing if you go on the roof. In reality, having a good cover story may make the difference. The camera/photographer idea is a good one. Chances are, since you're a woman, you might have a slightly better chance at being let off the hook by a security guard than if you were a man - that is, assuming the guard is a man. If the guard's a woman, you better be prepared to do some fast talking.

Don't get caught= no problem.
Check out the landing area and look to see if there is a suitable place to exit before you bother going in the building, don't just go see if you can get to the roof of a B you won't jump.

Call ahead and let them know you are coming. But first call and see who cleans the highrise glass, and offer to save them money. You will of course need access to the roof to look at the anchors and such before you submit the bid. You could save the property manager at LEAST 25%.... Every one likes saving money...heh

REALLY?! So call up the place ask who does the windows, then offer to save them money under the guise of another window company? Then go check it out? Correct me if I'm wrong.

The funniest part of the above is when the security guards wondered why the inspection team never signed out. I would have loved to have been there when they looked at their clipboard.

"Hey Bob, what happened to those guys."

"I don't know, but they are gone."

some city's have 'urban terrain' tours that allow you to see places you might not otherwise...i've been on the roof tops of several buildings legally just by signing up and showing up with my $20..

of course post 9/11 i imagine many of these tours have been discontinued in the interests of 'security'
