Jinx or Good Idea
New to the sport, have wilderness EMT, urban EMT. Considering having a jump kit in vehicle. A jump kit is basically the bag an EMT takes everywhere, maybe a backboard on the roof rack as well?

I am going to be a jinx by having some vital equipment to saving asses or is it a good idea?

It's definitely a good idea. You might also want to throw in some basic climbing gear for self-rescues.

There's usually a trauma bag floating around at the Turkey Boogie.

There's no such thing as a jinx, but there's such thing as a busted up BASE jumer. We can do a lot more with a trauma bag than without one. If you own one, and have the training to use it, there's not really much excuse to not have it at least in the car.

I think if you're going to have a spineboard that's cool, but at the very least consider getting a Kendrick Traction splint (or two) because they truly kick ass. Go heavy on splinting materials. SAM splints are rad, but have some serious splinting material in there. Pre-padded boards to splint large bones are always nice, particularly if we're not calling for a rescue but someone did a tib/fib and we're going to carry them down a talus to a car. Bone ends moving around can make that unpleasant, I've heard.Unsure

Added: Is there really an interest in BASE specific, compact, (jumpable?) trauma kits?

Fantastic idea!

It seems like things always go wrong when I'm not prepared. Maybe having all that equipment will ward off bad luck.

Think about how you'll feel when you are on a jump, something goes wrong, and you left your bag at home. Think about how much easier it would be to bring someone out of a small canyon with a backboard vs. without one, even if spinal immob. isn't needed.

The first day you're missing something vital that could've helped your buddy out will answer that question! Plus, being certified, you have the same training as the authorities, and especially in BASE, the less you have to call them, the better.

If someone breaks a bone, twists an ankle, or has another BLS injury, all you need is proper training, a backboard, splints, and a couple jumpers. Carry out your buddy, put him in the car and drive to the hospital. The hospital doesn't call the cops unless a crime (usually against another person) has obviously been commited. And if you're not worried about the law or calling EMS, think about the $400 ambulance bill you'll save your uninsured ass.

Disclaimer(to any idiots who might be on this board that shouldn't be): Do not hesitate to to call EMS if it is needed! Do not attempt to provide care you are not trained and currently certified in. The good samaritan law will not protect you unless you are current and certified.

FYI: A BLS injury does not include loss of or altered level of consciousness, moderate or severe bleeding, penetrating or blunt wounds to the chest, or anything else you think might be serious!

Don't forget that we take you, too, and you're kind of crippled at the moment. Take that into consideration w/ recent events and I'd say that cripples are good karma.

edited to add, I'm also a certified EMT and bartender, so I can treat even the minor injuries...my kit includes a few Vicodan and a bottle of single malt.
