Skydiving 7 cells
Which 7 cell skydiving canopies are best to prepare for base? Which has the best flare? Im looking to load it at about .9 or 1. Figure I might as well get a canopy I can do casual accuracy on. Don't know why but hitting the middle of the crop circles makes me all hot and flustered... Though dont really want a huge ass parafoil.

These are two very distinct questions. Are you looking for the best flare, or the one that flares most similar to the BASE canopy you are going to use?

BASE canopies. Ideally, find a used version of the BASE canopy you will be jumping, and practice with that.

A better questions might be "which has the flare most similar to my intended BASE canopy, so that I can practice making that flare?"

tom, will a base canopy without vents flare similarly to one with vents? Also will practising on a smaller base canopy be acceptable (loading about .9 or 1 to 1) Though I also need to jump this thing for the 250 jumps... Are quick openings an issue? One with a good flare is preferable. I'd like to keep my ankles and shit in shape for a while. I live in Aus so anything I'd buy to actually base jump(dont plan to soon, just 229 jumps to goWink) would need vents. How will they handle 200 odd terminal deployments?

An unvented BASE canopy will flare similarly to one with valves (one way) but noticeably better than one with simple (two way) vents. So, Blackjack, Troll MDV or Apex canopy Vtec with covers, will all flare pretty much the same as the unvented version of those canopies (Ace, Troll, Apex canopy). Be aware that the presence or absence of a 5th upper control line will also make a noticeable difference to the flare, so you want to practice in whichever configuration you will start BASE with.

If you are getting a separate canopy just to practice, why make it smaller?

A smaller canopy will definitely be different from a larger one, but it will be closer than a skydiving canopy.

Not really. If you bag the canopy and put a sail slider on it, it's going to be just fine, as far as getting "skydiving-like" openings.

You'll find that opinions vary on which canopy you ought to get. I'd recommend sorting out a BASE mentor, and trying to get something they have experience with, since that will make it easier for them to help you. In Australia, that likely means you're looking to get a Flik, or a FOX (easier to find used).

Fine. BASE canopies are built for slider down deployments. 200 terminal deployments aren't going to be an issue. You'll put noticeable wear on the F-111 fabric from UV (sunlight) spending all that time in the air, though.

I have two base canopies with over 500 jumps each on them, so I'd say you are good to go for 200 odd terminal skydiving openings.
