I've read some FAQs on the net (bridgeday, blinc) regarding BASE and to be honest, I got a little adrenaline just sitting here by my computer thinking about it.

I live in a fairly flat area and I'm hesitant to toss myself off the nearest high building without a little guidance / mentoring. If you live in the Chicago area and might consider helping, please PM me. I'd be happy to discuss my experience and aspirations with those who PM me.

I read many of the other forums here. I'll just say that I'm taking everything you say with a grain of salt, based on your record.

A posting record isn't the same as a skydiving record.

Some of the finest skydivers I've ever known have also been some of the worst anonymous trolls. It's a meaningless comparison, unless someone is posting bs in the gear and rigging forum, rather than in the Bonfire or the Speaker's Corner.

It's easy enough for j0nes to provide the credentials--to you or to someone else--to show good faith, but I'll bet you...<pick something>...the original post in the thread is sincere and the stated jump numbers are accurate.

Either that or it's the ghost of Skinflicka. (Kidding, I'm kidding.)

Well, Nunya, I don't know how to say this, but if you want help here, you're going to need to be a little more precise with exactly what you're looking for.

I have no idea where you live, who you are, what your gender is or pretty much anything else. Your profile is no help. I could dig through your posts and put a profile together and figure you out a bit more but you're the one asking for help, not me.

So, why don't you start by filling out your profile and we'll go from there. Hell, maybe you're a Seattle local and we can get together and discuss this over a beer. It might be exactly that easy.

Make a profile for one thing. I'd say many find it sketchy if you don't have one.

Why aren't you willing to share your interest and experience level's on the board and only pm's? Some in your area may not even message you for the fact that you are not willing to provide info unless THEY contact you.

I never put personal information out for the entire world to see. IMO putting your full name, address etc on a forum where illegal activites are discussed and planned (aka conspiring) is a poor idea.

I hope that's not the case. I hope some of those people might understand my hesitancy to post personal information on the "information superhighway".

If I'm not mistaken, Johnny Utah lives in the Chicago area and we know he offers excellent instruction for the right students (or at least he used to offer excellent instruction).

in my newb days at Hinckley, I remember mainfest asking him to drop by a time or two... but I haven't heard that name all season so he may have moved on....

However, in my experience, more often than not;

A person's attitudes and approach to a virtual community like DZ.com can be fairly indicative of their attitudes and approach to a real life community (like the BASE community).

Real people don’t hide, they stand up and get counted be it a real or virtual world. I also disagree with your opinion because I don't think of myself as a "criminal" and I find it telling you so quickly made the implication that I am.

Troy Loney hid. He did it for a number of years on rec.skydiving because he couldn't afford to voice his real opinion if he had any hope of continuing to work. He did reveal his identity to certain people, but not many. It was only after he died that most people knew who he was.

The rest of the examples in my head are still living, so I can't trot them out for examination. Some of them trolled for the amusement of themselves and others, some just didn't want to have to deal with the real-world consequences of their opinions--not with other jumpers, but with employers and such.

He didn't call you a criminal, Nick, and nothing he said about the potential consequences was untrue.

I don't know why I'm defending the guy, except I've seen a lot of people like him, and they never hurt anybody or did any true harm. They just got a kick out of tweaking the rest of us with a little mystery, but it was never done in a cruel or evil way. (Yes, there are evil trolls, but those are not who I'm talking about.)

Whatever. If it's really the case that everyone should be straightforward and in your face with their identity, then I guess it's time for Joy and Rick to publish the list in its entirety.

The BASE number list isn't really confidential, except by tradition. However, there are certain names, especially on the early part of the list that are marked confidential and a deal's a deal, even if that person is deceased as some of them are.
Nobody is asking jOnes for an address and phone number, but he's playing the same silly games in here as he/she did up-board. I mean look, now you and I are arguing . . .

Well, you know there's nothing I like better than a good healthy debate, Nick.

There are certain people on the list who are effectively anonymous because to be otherwise would endanger them. Take a poll, and tell me if everyone who posts on this board is known to everyone else. Just because they're not anonymous to you doesn't mean they're not anonymous to a whole bunch of others.

I don't think j0nes tried to troll this board, and I have a nice PM from him that seems pretty humble and reasonably informative to me.* Not in character at all for the guy who started out with an uproar, but I don't feel manipulated. Actually I feel more like I did when I figured out who Meatbomb was and forced him to fess up. (*But since you mentioned it, I'll see if I can persuade him to talk to me on the telephone.)

So anyway, I'm just sayin' that I think this mountain is really a very small anthill, and if I'm wrong, then I guess I'll be eating a lot of crow.

I'm not very fond of crow, Nick, and I sure don't go out of my way to eat it. And I still love you even when we disagree.
