Being a bit ill this year wiped me out financially.

That is a shame. A recurrence of an old illness should not cause such a financial hardship.

There is something wrong with the health care (insurance) system, as it applies to normal people.

You may be screwed because you have the same illness twice.
You may be screwed because your bones gave way on a BASE jump.

Everywhere but in the US, you'd be covered...
