Ca Locals
I'd like to express my envy of the beautiful coastlines y'all have out there as captured in photos off the highway bridge in the newest issue. Strikes concern with me though as to how much was revealed. Am I too sensitive or is it cool?

I presume you mean the 3 photos in Skydiving. I am surprised they printed it, especially with the name of the jumper and photographer. In my opinion, it was a bad idea.

It is a really beautiful jump, if you don't mind getting wet, salty sand in your canopy, and having to wash it out.

Re: [frankj23] Ca Locals
I was wondering if it was just me that thought that was a bad idea to print that. Glad someone else here agrees. And hell I've never even MADE a jump in CA yet.

Go easy. SKYDIVING has supported us since the very beginning. Mike Truffer has given us nothing but positive press when everyone else turned their backs on us.

If they do something that's a mistake in our judgment we should just eat it and move on . . .

Just wanted to add a second to what Nick wrote.

Mike is always willing to accept feedback--he's very good at listening to opposing points of view, and he has even been known to solicit them from time-to-time. But he is still the publisher of a news magazine, and if someone brings him publishable material, asking him not to print it is like asking him to cut his own throat.

He can't publish what isn't submitted. If there's a problem here, it isn't with Mike, it's with the person(s) who submitted the photographs.

Re: [NickDG] Ca Locals
My disappointment wasn't with Skydiving for printing that. It was more with the people submitting it to SKydiving. My post wasn't very clear about that.

I logged on today Precisely to see if anyone was discussing this or not.

Gorgeous photos. But curious as to why they were submitted.

Re: [linny] Ca Locals
Can someone let those of us who don't get the magazine know who the jumper and photographer were?

Courtesy of a fellow BASE jumper.

The caption reads:

"Fernando Monteiro jumps from a highway bridge along the California coastline at xxx xxx south of xxxxxxx. Photographs by Fred Pompermayer."

Re: [Twoply] Ca Locals
That is truly a sad situation. With no respect for other jumpers, I can't believe these assholes sent the photos in. As said before, you can't blame Skydiving for this---they are only doing their jobs.
I live only 15 min. from this site and jump it on a regular basis, but in a way where others can continue to jump it safely (bust factor wise)!

That's the way it always is--it only takes one person to fuck it up for everyone else!

Re: [TomAiello] Ca Locals
Actually I don't know Mike but I have sent in several articles and pics about skydiving to Sue, the editor.

Years ago I dropped my subscription to Parachutist because, in part, they were completely ignoring a big part of jumping -- BASE. Skydiving regularly covers BASE-jumping events, incidents and equipment, from participants and manufacturers and organizers sides -- I think they have a great mag!

Well worth the couple of bucks. (They have also covered the ABP and the on-going fencing with the NPS in-depth). They are a credible voice in the skydiving, ground-launching and BASE-jumping communities.

I actually wish I could drop the subscription to parachutist and save a tree or two. however I do occasionally make a skydive that requires the damn membership card. such crap.

Re: [nicrussell] Ca Locals
you could jump at a non uspa DZ, i know they are around...

Re: [leroydb] Ca Locals
yes, i know. Lodi is my closest option (and my 1st choice), but I do like to visit places where my friends go to jump that have the USPA policies. I'm just saying I wish I could get the USPA membership sans Parachutist. (with a slight discount of course.Wink)

I actually LIKE and dislike the fact that the USPA has a seemingly 'no BASE' policy. I still dont like the mag that much. I loathe most of the letters actually.

My experience trying to get BASE articles published in Skydiving has been somewhat less than positive.
