i checked out the boogie website about the el gigante boogie. on the site it says you need 100+ BASE jumps.

bah. bummer, dont have 100 base jumps.
someday soon i will. and then i will have to get in gear and go down with the boys...

Weather yesterday was beautiful. Clear and sunny, warm temperatures, very calm all day. First load went around 6am, we didn't leave the bridge until around 10pm. Keeping my fingers crossed for this to hold out.

So how many jumps did you do Tom???

Also it would be great if you could post some pictures from your up coming class...

The weather is looking awesome for the week! Twin Falls weather Even the winds are looking pretty decent, hopefully it stays that way!

Myself and three other people should be flying into TFs in a Twin Comanche sometime Sunday afternoon and we'll be there for a few days. We're going to miss some of the action of course, but we should be there for the 2nd half.

Today we've got some pretty strong wind and a lot of turbulence in the canyon. We've pretty much been grounded since about 10am. Hopefully it'll calm down later this evening.

The Arkansas BASE Crew will arrive tommorrow evening. Hope to see some familiar faces!

Today was another "grounded after 10am" day. I think there were 3 or 4 loads before that, but the day pretty much ended then. We tried to sneak in a sunset, but ended up drinking beer at the Outback because the wind wouldn't die.

I'm guessing it will be typical idaho spring weather. Calm or light winds until 9-11am. So if you want to crank out jumps, show up at 5am, and get as many as you can, then rest and party all afternoon, and repeat...

When going through an airport, what do you call your rig?

Water landings under round canopies are _far_ safer than squares on land when the winds are high.

They dont care if you or your canopy is singe they just want to know whats inside..

And yesterday was a good day. Aside from a few hours of wind in the late morning, we had good conditions all day.

We're averaging about half the days good, at this point. Keeping fingers crossed for the weekend...

Got 2 jumps on Fri when the wind died down, 4 on sat, and 1 on Sun.
Total of 7 sweet jumps.

Don said that he had two cracked vertebrae in the lumbar spine. It sounds like it's going to be one of those "two days in the hospital and a month in a back brace" kind of things.

I'll post if I get more info.

Latest report is fractured tailbone and L5. That sounds kind of weird to me, but anyway, that's what I heard. He's supposed to be out of the hospital in the next few days.

He was apparently jumping a camera and going low on a 2 way. Sounds like he fixated on the footage and lost altitude awareness, resulting in a very low pull and hard impact into the water.

I think what can be learned from this; JT has a lot of jumps off of the bridge, it was a normal thing. Complacency kills, and it almost did again. No matter what, this sport is dangerous (potato bridge or not), you can make it as safe as possible, take every single precaution, and it still remains dangerous. Heal well JT, hope to see you jumping again soon. Really glad everything worked out.

Sounds pretty much like what I saw... or there is the other side of this; He was trying to go low for fun/the show/the hell of it, whatever anyone else wants to speculate. He was jumping a camera, he was the low guy, he did pull low and he did impact the water quite hard. I would say that is a pretty good account of what happened.

I'm still trying to figure out why he planned on going in the water with a camera on.

I am almost sure he wasn't planning on the water. Something didn't go as planned, whether that be a low pull intentionally or through complacany is left to be said. How you healing, man? Last I saw you were laid up in Tom's. Hope you are well.

He's fine, and if it's his wish to tell, he'll tell. But don't speculate about things you have no idea about. Not one of you have any idea about what 'actually' went on.

 

Covering up accidents may be good for the ego, but it's bad for other jumpers. We can all learn from accidents.

Knowing some folks in the local medical community, and knowing that he was in the hospital here, I'm fairly certain that "he's fine" is not "what 'actually' went on."

No one here bears him any ill will. We're not trying to kick the guy while he's down. Everyone has accidents, and no one has a problem with that. Covering up is silly in a case like this. It's far more helpful to other jumpers to discuss the accident and help them avoid similar things.

What if you witnessed the jump first hand like Rauk and I did? Sure we don't know what was going through his brain (likely never will), but Rauk is only saying what he saw that day. The jumper in question was super low in the basement, a 5+ second delay before a PC was presented to the air (on a 7 second to impact jump) and his body slammed into the water hard before his slider was even given a chance to come down. Now if that doesn't qualify as "what actually went on", then I'm sorry you guys need to wake up to the reality that Mother Earth doesn't give a shit how cool YOU think you are. This shit will kill you if you don't respect it's dangers.

NOTE: (this doesn't take into account air resistance and assumes you start off fairly close to the ground)

For a 480' fall, with no friction, you do get about 5.5 s (5.46 s) before impact (considering g = 9.81 m/s). So speed (g * t) would be about 53.6 m/s or 120 mph.

With the air resistance, after 5.5 s, the actual speed is closer to 90 mph, according to what I know. Air resistance has a significant influence, even after 4 or 5 s of freefall. Though, time before impact will still be under 6 s. Yeah, well, I'm not very helpfull

I guess I got my numbers mixed up. But nevertheless, I witnessed JT take his jump deep into the basement. Of course who knows what caused him to go so low, but the boy came super close to killing himself.

If you read, I said just that, "It's all speculation". I just stated what I saw. I have no ill words, no ill thoughts, no ill will. JT has always been nothing but friendly the few times we came across each other in Twin and I was sick when I saw him hit the water. I never made a claim on what JT meant to happen, only what I saw. The only person who really knows what happened is him. Either way, it doesn't change the way I feel. Chances are pretty good that all of us will spend a nice long stint in the hospital if we keep at it for long enough.
